Real Product Opportunity

I'm currently working for a major corporation that pressure forms very large parts. As you can imagine, after the parts are molded, cut-out, and cleaned, there is a lot of wasted scrap that is "down cycled". What I'm thinking is that there is alot of opportunity to "design-in" products/components/wi...

Upcoming Exhibitions or Shows in Hawaii??

Hi,

I'll be traveling to Honolulu from March 14-23 and was wondering if anyone would know of some shows or exhibitions I could attend while I'm there. Not only would this help from an education standpoint, but being a private consultant, it would give me a reason to write-off the trip :)

Thanks!

"Cool" Hearing Aids?

Pretty much all my life I've had poor hearing but was always against wearing a hearing aid because they always looked so terrible. Unfortunately, as I'm getting older, I'm finding that this problem is becoming even more of one since it has the potential to affect my reputation at work. So, I'm wonde...

Kohler

I was looking back in the forums regarding this company and was curious if anyone who was hired (or left) recently might have more up to date information regarding the state of their design department and how they look at their designers. From what I've read, there was alot of bashing over the past ...

Gonna have to agree with everyone on the skills end of things. Wish I was crankin' that stuff out back in high school. As long as you keep pushin that hard through college, you'll be fine. So anyways, as far as a critique, here's my two cents: Danny - The suit is pretty cool, but as others have said...

Well as Core said, alot of the products were striving for simplicity in both form and function. Could it be that this resurgence of formal simplicity that's been making a push for a few years now is getting to it's peak and is now perceived as boring, "uninspired", etc.? Just a thought, any others?

Designing in CAD vs. Designing on Paper

I've often heard this debate between the two schools of philosophy, pen vs. CAD. On the one hand, designing in CAD allows you to know that what you are creating will be able to make it to production with minimal changes due to the knowledge of your form's proportions vs. what lies underneath. On the...

Collapsing Mechanisms or Products

Just wondering if anyone might have some products or mechanisms they have an example of that can collapse, fold, or get smaller in a way they thought was cool.

Op, UC would still be your best bet if you are "really looking for that strong business side as well as the ID" (although I'm somewhat insulted by that comment as well). Just because you're in a school that does well in it's business major, doesn't mean you'll get it through some sort of osmosis by ...

Great response micberryman! Obviously I've misunderstood the pros and cons of both of these organizations and I appreciate you pointing out alot of the benefits provided to us by IDSA that are often overlooked or never seen. I'm definetly familiar with the portfolio reviews held at the various IDSA ...

"now even though i have an idsa membership; i have little interest in using it nor do i know what i could do with it if i did..." Maybe this is the problem?? I always hear about how great IDSA is "as long as you put effort in". But honestly, aside from attending meetings, paying my dues, paying to g...

I agree, you get out what you put in. That being said, I'm not a member anymore and I still pay to attend seminars. I just couldn't see the benefit of becoming a member when I can pay a little bit more to enjoy the same benefits. All it seemed to me was that I was having to pay upfront so I could ge...

Core IDSA?

I'll go out on a limb and suggest that I may not be the only one that is upset with how the IDSA is run when compared to other profession orientated organizations. Not only are we expected to pay heavy dues for membership, we are also expected to pay heavy entry fees into various IDSA events (Nation...
