Re: Rendering hands into product shots

The example hand looks oddly photoshopped. Is that a bevel and emboss effect on the lower edge of the hand? Sorry, professional hazard. There are tons of stock photography hands. I've been using adobe stock a lot for product rendering backgrounds and what not. For a quick mock up, and when 99.99% o...

Re: Future of Product Design

If you're basing your decision solely on demand and not what you enjoy doing then just study Computer Science and get coding, or Robotics.

Re: iPad Pro 2 - gripe

It's clearly intentional to get you to buy the cover. With Apple, why are you even surprised at such practice now?

Re: Learning Solidworks for ID

If you know Rhino well and apply the same logic to surfacing in SolidWorks it should be fine. It takes more time to get all the sketches ("curves") down but at least when they are done they are easily edited and manipulated and the surface can be changed at any time.

Re: London for industrial designers

I think you've got the wrong plan to get to working in London. I would heavily advise getting whatever job you can in the UK first, and then move to London as and when you can get a job there. Trying only to go straight to London could work, but it would be easier to move there from within the UK th...

Re: "Budget" Cad prodgrams

Rhino for educators and students is only $99 and one of the most widely used industry standard pieces of software for the design industry It's really not. To say that x piece of software is "one of the most widely used" they would have to be like 30%+ of the market or sharing a similar % with other...

Re: What Computer Skills (gral.) Do Practitioners Require?

It's like they were given a brief, came up with 2 or 3 ideas that sort of worked and then jumped right onto their PC to model and render a shiny picture (we had an intern who did this repeatedly earlier this year), and they will pass because it clears the global criteria set by the university (20% ...

There are zero logical reasons to use Photoshop over Illustrator for logo design.

Re: Best or favorite iPad sketching app?

I bought Procreate and found it to be horrible so far.
Medibang is my favourite after a quick few minutes playing with everything. I plan to have a proper go at getting good on Concepts though.

Re: CAD Render-Rama

I create each of the plies as a separate body in SolidWorks so that way a distinct material can be applied to each body. I first create the primary surface, then thicken, then copy the bottom surface, thicken again, etc etc for each of the plies. This technique has the advantage of creating edges t...

George Bush was president for 8 years. I'd still trust 99.99999% of humanity over him to preside over a country.

Re: Employment ads that want it all..

The plane is on fire. Do you want a dinosaur / expert in the left seat (with 18 or more years experience) or someone who "can do it all" ? This is a pointless question and years spent doing something does not make one a natural at it, or an expert. Ability cannot be measured in years spent doing so...
