Re: 15 pieces of advice for young designers

I think the quit first and find a new gig later thing is a bit of a personal preference. some people do better with that cold turkey, walk out the door style. In my experience I've always been better about finding a job when I have a job. But I like to be truthful. I have told past bosses that a si...

Re: 15 pieces of advice for young designers

If they would push a little harder they would be surprised how much more they would be paid. This is the key phrase. You control your career. No one else. Realizing you are not getting paid enough and actively seeking out a resolution or a new opportunity is a lot different then having the mindset ...

Re: 15 pieces of advice for young designers

I have just finished my Bachelor´s degree in Industrial Design and I am on kind of a professional crisis...I felt really connected with what you wrote, I am afraid of getting a job outside design, but jobs at my country doesn´t seem to go too much for design...If I choose what puts food on the tabl...

Re: 15 pieces of advice for young designers

This is for those of you that have come up since the depression/recession that started in '08/09. I get the sense that many of you have been getting taken advantage of once you begin your careers, and that is wrong. 16 - Design is not a calling. There is nothing particularly noble about creating va...

Re: FRUSTRATING Online Design Thinking Course

Yeah I hear ya. In my new role, I was actually hired by a guy that took a course at Stanford. He saw it as an opportunity and hired me to help him create it. That is the way this should be handled and what they should be teaching.

FRUSTRATING Online Design Thinking Course

I have been seeing a lot of this lately, certificates for Design Thinking being taught by various different schools. It all started with Stanford’s d.school but now has moved to every school under the sun. I have always been frustrated with the concept that someone can take a class and come out thin...

Re: Home Studio Essentials

Love the pictures of the spaces. So much great inspiration here. The camera view for Skype calls is something I have been thinking a lot about. I plan to put quite a bit of art behind my desk, so that should provide a decent back drop. I will also have gator board and post-its up so I can alway pull...

Re: Home Studio Essentials

Thanks everyone. I've been working on it all weekend and will be working all week. I love the "commute" concept. I take the kids to school, so that is kind of my :commute" The basement is a good place where I can have my own space and make it mine. It's unfinished, so I'm turning it into a loft like...

Home Studio Essentials

Hi All, I am about to start a new gig (more to come on that in the future) and I will be split between working in the office and at home. I have never really been a working from home kind of person so I need to set up a home studio. I have planned to take over my basement and wanted to reach out to ...

Re: 15 pieces of advice for young designers

ID seems to now be defined by people that arent designers at all. It now seems to be driven by getting the file done by 5PM more than a concientious effort to develop valuable 3D products. To me Justin is a younger designer. Idainc - I'm not sure where this is coming from. I'm also not sure where y...

Re: 15 pieces of advice for young designers

I just got off the phone with one of my old school professors. He dropped this quote on me: “young designers know all the rules, old designers know all the exceptions” ... I’m not sure if that is always true but it has a fun symmetry ‬ So true. This is actually where this list started to build. A f...

15 pieces of advice for young designers

It has been a long time since I have posted on these boards. Life has gotten in the way but I told myself this summer that I was going to try to get back to being active in the Core community again. So hear it goes. I posted this article on LinkedIn and thought I would share. As the new school year ...
