New Design leaders

Lots of good brands mentioned. As far as individual designers go I can not think of many who have had a more profound impact in the last few years than Michael DiTullo. I've seen his book turn up at every design school I have been to in the past few years and the work he did at Nike seems to have in...

Re: Client habits

I have run into the situation you describe many times. As others have stated there are things you can do to try to avoid this and there are times when the best thing to do is include it in your quote but not call it out as a deliverable so that if it is requested some of the time is already built in...

At least you can feel a bit better by knowing that your design is superior.

Re: REd Dot Charges

That is a good read.
Paying some kind of fee seems fair because the coordination of those things is time-consuming. I think Red Dot takes it too far so we stopped participating, same thing with IDEA. There are many other competitions that cover their costs in other ways so we stick with those.

Re: Biomaterials, agromaterials, vs traditional plastics

There is a lot to consider. Perhaps the trickiest parts are factoring in the manufacturing process your product requires and determining the expected life-span of the product. Without knowing at least those two things I think that confidently naming a material would be very difficult.

Re: Looking for Design Principles and/or Creative Directors:

There is a really great association of firm owners called the association of professional design firms (APDF). I bet that if you contact the executive director (Cathy Brownlee) she could help you arrange interviews at their next conference. I am not sure what the current requirements are but you mig...

Re: Quantifying Sustainability

Lots of good suggestions already here. Perhaps this will also help. When we have been asked to take this task on in similar categories we started by getting the larger team to agree on what the long-term ideal is for the offering. Specifically, we broke it down into the all of the elements that make...

Re: Design Summer Camp 2010: Session 1

I am not familiar with the program but I know of several similar ones and they are general only as valuable as what you are able to put into them. If you have the time and desire to immerse yourself in design and building your skills my guess is that you will see value in it.

Re: Tent design/ survey

I'd be glad to take the survey today while I eat my lunch. I don't see what the big deal is. Although everyone is right in saying that you will not get an accurate sampling of campers, it sounds like you know that. It seems to me like if you don't want to take the survey it is pretty easy to avoid.

Re: Discussion about the IDSA

I did not state that IDSA did everything for everyone at every position in every company but I still can't think of an organization that has done more. Certainly lots and lots of other people (from Russell Wright to Starck) and other organizations (from APDF to DMI) have made great contributions but...

Re: Discussion about the IDSA

There is no entity that has done more to sell "design" to the corporate boardroom and the general public than IDSA - ever.

This is really true. I agree with it 100% and in my mind it should be the starting point for every conversation about the organization.

Re: Discussion about the IDSA

In all seriousness, do you really think that Core is that great and beneficial to the profession? Do you really think it does that much more than the IDSA to benefit designers?
