Re: 15 pieces of advice for young designers

The intent of "you can always quit" originated in a post on another thread, in which a young designer was being paid like $35k in a coastal city - aka being paid less than minimum wage in a big city once you consider that most coastal cities are pushing $15/hr min wage and a lot of young designers a...

Re: A.I. "designed" cars

I think this is fascinating, and as presented, it applies only to styling which is great. The other, interesting 99% of design - framing the problem and exploring conceptual paths forward - is still untouched for now. But how cool would it be to plug in visual language rules and see 1000 permutation...

Re: Freelance job, on-site?

In 2019 Chicago minimum wage bumps up to $13. As a contract position, $15/hr will realistically be as low or lower than minimum wage. Also no benefits, but you'll be working with power tools and chemicals in a workshop environment. And in spite of the fact that they want to see a portfolio of past w...

Re: The Concept of Enough

I think our culture is excessively saturated in stuff to the extent that we could probably cease all manufacturing and live off a mix of unsold old stock, repairs, repurposing, or just going without inessential items for a good decade or two and experience no appreciable decline in the standard of l...

Re: 15 pieces of advice for young designers

This is for those of you that have come up since the depression/recession that started in '08/09. I get the sense that many of you have been getting taken advantage of once you begin your careers, and that is wrong. 16 - Design is not a calling. There is nothing particularly noble about creating val...

Re: When can I expect to start making decent money?

It absolutely makes sense. I want to add to the comments above. I started out a little below $35k in 03, with $17k in federal loan debt at historically low (2.8%) rates, or about $180/mo in loan payments. My debt was a little below average then, and it is my understanding that average debt has at le...

Re: When can I expect to start making decent money?

I make $35k / year in one of the most expensive cities in the US. You are being screwed. Hard. That is fifteen-years-ago entry-level money but without the buying power. Adjusted for its 2003 buying power, that's about $24k. Which would have been poverty wages in a small city back then, and less tha...

The new world

I'm probably not going to be posting on design related subjects anymore. I have to devote my spare time to a higher cause, namely doing whatever I can to fight the fascist wave that is overtaking America, so that my children can live in a country worthy of them. I welcome the rest of you to do the s...

Hire a tax accountant to tell you what to do. They specialize in this sort of thing, and you won't have to worry about misinterpreting the law.

Re: Anybody else's feel like this some days?

Execution is what separates great designers from great concept artists. Most of us are capable of conceiving amazing products, being able to push as much of that intent through the pipeline requires communication, politics, negotiation and enough craftiness to keep the intent alive and delivering w...

Re: Anybody else's feel like this some days?

I assume it's always going to be a negotiation, and honestly I usually come to support most of the design changes because they tend to happen for good reasons, but I do a lot of medical work so the big overarching vision is secondary to patient efficacy. Some of the best victories are also on progra...

I'm not an admin, but I'm sure there will be plenty of fascism to talk about, in terms of how that impacts our clients, our work culture, funding, etc.

Re: Microsoft Surface Studio

All I see here is a slightly rearranged Wacom variant. The dial may be neat, but unless the pixels have been brought to the surface of the glass, and the tooth of the screen truly feels like the media the tablet is simulating, it's not like they've solved the very major feel versus output issues tab...
