Re: doodling

Peter Stevens ran the design studio for a spell while I worked at Rivian Automotive around 2011 - 2012. Very nice and thoughtful guy. Working with those designers in the studio is what inspired me to pursue ID, hence why I'm here today! Definitely a legendary designer and I'm happy to see that peopl...

Re: Methods in Solidworks

As others have said, there are pros and cons to both Top Down and Bottom up modeling approaches. Professionally, I always just ask the customer at the beginning of a project if they have a preference for how they'd like the models constructed, or if they have any special protocols or design guidelin...

Re: Pencil Sharpener Recommendations?

Thanks for the recommendations! Seems like you both went the vintage route. That Boston brings me back to elementary school, except it was the cheezy wood panel version: https://goo.gl/images/SxwbDQ

Pencil Sharpener Recommendations?

Hey all, I've recently found that I really like doing construction lines with Polychromos pencils and then going to marker. I've been using a cheapo generic manual pencil sharpener for forever and decided it is time to upgrade. Anybody have any recommendations? Any products to stay away from? This i...

Re: Audio book and or podcast recommendation?

Podcasts preserved my sanity when I had a 45-60 minute commute. Fortunately now I get to work from home! My goto Podcasts are: 99% Invisible - Hosted by Roman Mars, a former Architect turned producer, who does stories about architecture & design. TED Radio Hour - Hosted by Guy Raz, who compiles diff...

Another one I didn't see on anyone's list is the Uni Posca. The make multiple thicknesses and the white is nice and opaque:

Re: Material for inflatable toy system

Helium balloons at the supermarket would also be a good source of inspiration/research to look at how the seams are designed to create different forms. Just make sure you think through where the inlet is placed! I saw this in a store a while back and it made me do a double take. I feel like this was...

Re: Your 5 Most Important Shop Tools

A lot can be accomplished with hand tools. As a student, or amateur on a budget, buying a Ryobi multi-tool kit with a Drill, Circular Saw, and Jig Saw will allow you to make just about anything with some clever jigs for cutting things accurately. That's all I've got for now at home, and I get by. Bu...

Re: Fiskars Orange-Handled Classic Scissors' 50th Anniversar

Fiskars scissors cut very well. However, I've got beef with them, because my thumb always gets stuck in the thumb-hole when I try to put them down. Does anyone else have this problem? I'm on the larger side of the human spectrum (6'2", 190 lb), but by no means am I a giant. My hands fit a large size...

Re: iPad Pro + Pencil?

I think I'll have to disagree here - my SurfaceBook (i7, loaded, max RAM, max SSD, etc) is an awesome machine that runs everything I put at it and is a great sketching machine to boot. You'll find other observations of mine regarding my workflow in different topic conversations on this site - but t...

Re: iPad Pro + Pencil?

Do you mean rendering sketches? I use photoshop directly on the surface, I do the linework in Leonardo. Do you mean CAD Rendering? I don't do that on the Surface. No way I will inflict that pain on me. I mean, yeah, technically you can. But you don't really want to. After all it is an Ultrabook so ...

Re: iPad Pro + Pencil?

@Mrog I'm curious, how do you handle rendering? @everyone Does anyone have experience running Solidworks on the newer Wacom MobileStudio Pro models? I prefer Windows to iOS, so the idea of the Surface is really compelling. However, the price point is really high for models with enough processing pow...

Re: Mech Eng in New Product Development

I'd suggest researching firms that you'd like to work for and emailing them directly to introduce yourself and your skillset. Sometimes, you end up contacting someone around the that they're bidding for a project or have identified a need to hire a new person. If you fit the bill... it is much easie...

Not sure what your budget is, but the Epson Artison 1430 has great print quality for the <$500 price point: http://a.co/7heYASO My wife is a graphic designer and is very particular about print quality. From our research, this printer seemed to be the best one in our price range for her home office. ...
