Re: What Computer Skills (gral.) Do Practitioners Require?

It will obviously be different for everyone posting here, but for me the software list is: Photoshop Illustrator Sketchbook Pro Solidworks Rhino Keyshot After Effects Powerpoint Excel Word Also, Jarjones, I would respectfully have to disagree with your statement that "most designers are probably not...

Re: Looking for Feedback on this Pillow

I think your material story is strong, but as AVClub mentioned the design needs work. At the moment, other than having marketing on the package there is nothing that makes this pillow stand out. There is a lot that can be improved in the ergonomics of today's U-shaped pillows (I am familiar with thi...

Re: Does Product Design Not Mean Industrial Design Now?

I never understood some industrial designers aversion to the term industrial design. It is a much more defensible and unique tittle. Although I generally agree, I will say when talking to "non-design people" they will often say "Oh, so you design things like pipes?" and then I begin the explanation...

Does Product Design Not Mean Industrial Design Now?

Bit of a rant.... I've noticed in the last year or two that the term "Product Designer" seems to be being used more to describe a designer responsible for the UX/UI of a project (app or website) versus an Industrial Designer. This really hit me today as I had a ID candidate (fresh out of school with...

Re: Drawing Setup recommendations

An easy, inexpensive drawing setup with plenty of room is a hollow core door from Home Depot, and a couple of saw horses. Paint, and stain as needed. You can build the saw horses at an angle if you like to get more of a drafting table effect. You can make them look really great, and the pre-drilled ...

Metallic Paint Spec Books

Currently, when we spec metallic paint, if there isn't a Pantone metallic chip that's right (which is usually the case), I have to send our sourcing partner the page out of our DuPont Spectramaster book and hope they send the page back at the end of the project. To avoid this, I am looking for a met...

Re: iPad Pro + Pencil + Procreate

I usually save either to my image roll (so it get automagically onto all my devices), or to dropbox. To dropbox makes it pretty much the same as saving a file on a computer as it ends up in my computer folder via dropbox. R I'll have to try transferring it using Dropbox. My iPad is the only iOS dev...

Re: Software for a Student

I can see your point, but in my studio we are typically showing 2-3 final concepts rendered out in 3D. To fully define three models is very time consuming, and ultimately a waste of time for 2 of the design directions. Having said that, you are correct that any big changes to your design modeled in ...

Re: Software for a Student

I may be biased because I am a long time SolidWorks user but I am now learning to use Rhino because I am going to be teaching it come September to university students. I can honestly say that I see absolutely no point in learning Rhino whatsoever. The notion that it is easier or faster than SolidWo...

Re: iPad Pro + Pencil + Procreate

What is the best way to get files on or off the iPad to use downstream on my workstation PC in the office?

This has always been to me one of the biggest issues I have working on the iPad. I've never found a way that felt as organic as saving a file on a standard computer does.

Re: Software for a Student

As a student Rhino is $128 to buy, and you own it. They even let you upgrade it to a commercial license after graduation (at a cost). Solidworks is $86 (as a student), but that is for a one year license. They are both really powerful, and industry standards. Fusion 360 is free to students. It isn't ...

Re: T-Splines replacement?

I've pointed this out in other places but I keep telling people that pound for pound you can look at multiple platforms Fusion, Key Shot, Rhino, or Solidworks, nPower Surfacing, Keyshot but Modo by itself is just a better solution if organic modeling is what you're wanting to achieve. Having "dynam...
