Re: What does it take to be a great design lead/manager?

3. I have to be careful writing to my wife. These lists make her feel like I'm an angry dictator. HA! I'll have to adopt that technique. I'll let you know how it goes in my KPIs. Seriously though, are there any books or articles that you guys have read that helped you? Or did you mostly learn this ...

Re: What does it take to be a great design lead/manager?

Wow. Great feedback, everyone. I'll definitely keep this in mind. As a teacher, I think I have the mentorship aspect of management more figured out than, say, the KPI's that Mr 914 mentions.

Also, I notice that managers really like numbered lists :)

What does it take to be a great design lead/manager?

Hey guys, so I've been thinking about this topic for a little while now. For managers: what are the things that you've done that yield the best outcomes for your teams? What are techniques that worked well? How would you describe your day to day work, and how does that work differ from someone who i...

Re: Inspirational Design Shorts

I'm teaching this semester. I've been trying to articulate how to communicate certain abstract concepts of industrial design in a way that students would understand. So I figured I'd do this video to help get all of my thoughts in one place. I still think it has value for professional ID'ers as well...

Re: Best examples of great industrial design?

Well, this question is highly subjective and very loaded. With that said, I do think that all of the examples cited so far are really great. I am also a big fan of them for the same reasons their respective posters mentioned. I think POC did a great job of making helmets not look ridiculous. Daydrea...

Re: 4 interviews, same feedback

I think your portfolio could use a lot of work. The forms that you have chosen don't always follow the function or match up with your target market, it is much too wordy (no one's going to read that stuff), and the projects seem a little bit under-developed in general. I would strongly advise readin...

Re: "Things are going digital"

Guys, don't forget: Even if you don't end up doing industrial design as your profession, a lot of the skills and thinking can be applied to other fields. So even if some or most of your students don't end up practicing industrial design professionally, they still are learning something that has valu...

Re: "Things are going digital"

As things go more global, inevitably certain jobs will be outsourced. My instructor, however, was saying that ALL (or most) ID jobs would be sent overseas within 10 years. That was in 2010.

Re: "Things are going digital"

I graduated in 2011 and everyone was saying that there would be a huge shift towards UX. Much like manufacturing, all ID jobs were going to be shipped out to China in the next 5-10 years. Looking back, this statement was completely ridiculous and I don't know how that guy could say that. Think about...

Re: Industrial Design Case Study Web Page Design Feedback

This is an excellent exhibition of process and the product is cool. The graphic design needs a lot of work, though. Right now the fonts and spacing just aren't working. Maybe go on behance and look at some graphic designers' layouts for inspiration.

also i think this belongs in "portfolios"

Re: Star Wars: The Last Jedi (Spoilers)

I totally understand Mark Hamill's protest of that plot choice. However, I do think that the idea of Luke becoming old and bitter and hesitant is interesting and maybe even plausible. But the way it was executed in the movie seemed weak...maybe because the actor didn't totally believe in it? Once ag...

Re: Star Wars: The Last Jedi (Spoilers)

The movie was confused and messy. There were too many things happening that didn't push the plot forward. What was the point of the entire side-plot where they go to the Vegas planet? What did we learn from it? How did it help to develop the characters? So after 30 minutes of watching this semi-bori...

Re: Is Industrial Design Very Technical / Engineering Relate

You will not be a good industrial designer if you are not willing to actually build things. At the very least, you won't be as good as you potentially could be. Saying you want to be an industrial designer but you don't want to delve into technical manufacturing problems or build things is kind of l...

Re: Setting up a royalty deal based on personal project

Just be aware that certain brands have been known to steal designs from inventors like this. I had a friend who worked at a large housewares company who would routinely steal ideas from people who would come to them with new ideas, and it was actually the main reason why he ended up leaving the comp...

Re: The designers personality...

As mentioned a bunch of times here, there's a huge spectrum. Stereotypically, I would say that the positive traits of designers are passionate and focused. The negative traits are socially awkward and insecure/snobbish. That is just a generalization, obviously.
