Re: The Philosophy of Familiarism

Hi Nick, I know you didn't claim to have invented this and of course you are allowed to share your thoughts and observations. At the same time I think I have been a bit harsher in my assesment simply because I know you have a certain reach on social media and probably especially a lot of students fo...

Re: The Philosophy of Familiarism

Copypasta from the other thread for Nick ;) I think this is honestly pretty pretentious. So he's some guy online who looked at Fukasawas' style really hard and then came up with this new "design style" that he puts next to things like modernism and minimalism? I'm sorry but I think he has no idea ab...

Re: What is BMW doing?

@rkuchinsky lol I really don't get car designers sometimes. Most of those I know are masterful at what they do. They out-sketch all the other designers and their feeling for shapes and proportions is usually incredible. And those hired by companies like BMW are supposed to be the best of the best. Y...

Re: Thesis project survey

It honestly sounds like a survey that was made after you already made up your mind what your project will look like. Lots of leading questions ;) Rule of thumb: If I read your survey and already exactely know what you WANT to hear it's probably not a very well thought out survey.

Re: 15 pieces of advice for young designers

I think you think of "quitting" as "giving up". Which has nothing necessarily to do with each other. Quitting a job is probably one of the most powerful career advancement tools you have as an employee. Your possibility to quit anytime is the single biggest leverage you have against your employer. I...

Re: 15 pieces of advice for young designers

Having the attitude that you can always quit is not a good attitude to have and will not lead to success. If you are going in with that attitude then you have already decide that design is not for you and you should save your money. I am with bcpid on this one. What has that to do if "design is for...

Re: Mimitens Independent Designer vs. Big Brand

Have you had a similar occurrence yourself? Yes, we have an entire closet in our office jam packed with competitor products. So did every place I worked before. It is common practice to benchmark the competitors everywhere. We actually have anonymous shipping and email-adresses for the purpose of o...

Re: Payless Shoes Marketing Stunt

...if they want those types of consumers maybe they should actually look at changing the context & experience(s) around their product? But they don't want that! They only want to send the message that they COULD do that if they CHOSE to - this is a jab at high end brands stating exactely that: the ...

Re: modeling the rear surface of iMac

Ah, the "pillow" shape, a classic. There are many ways to do it, the one on the iMac most likely done in a "proper" surface tool like alias. It can be done in any software that has surfacing capabilities and can conrol G2 Surfaces. I'm not using solidworks as my main tool right now so can't tell you...

Re: Longest continuously manufactured products

70 years? That's cute ;) The classic thonet chair - an industrial design icon and probably the very first industrially produced furniture shipped "IKEA style". Still made by the same company, run still by the very same family (5th generation), made basically in the same way until now for an impressi...

Re: Best Laptops For 3D Rendering + Modeling

Well I was using my MacBook air for simple 3d printing with Cura so I would say if you get lucky, get a 16mb MacBook air. For now, anything with 16mb ram or more is enough. For a pc though, I would double that. This is absolutely horrible advice that is factually incorrect. Firstly, Macbook air is ...

Re: iPad Pro 2 - gripe

They just cast a custom workpiece of metal that they machine over. Minimal excess. This is Apple, they don't have to work with normed off-the-shelf work pieces like the rest of us plebs ;)

Re: iPad Pro 2 - gripe

My main gripe is with yet another price bump of roughly 25%. I wanted to update from my 2017 pro for sure, now I am not so sure anymore... I mean, c'mon Apple. Yeah, I know, Apple being pricy is not news and a boring thing to complain about, but 25% price bump plus forced pencil and accessory update...
