Re: Moving to a new city, and portfolio updates

I've seen industrial design friends carve out a niche in DC doing things like exhibit design for museums - some great opportunities there.

I'm surprised nobody has posted the new London tube train by Priestman Goode.

Re: Did I mess up?

The only way this would be unprofessional is if your mom came in to the building with you and waited in the lobby....... Something similar happened to me once.. I was visiting LA with my girlfriend, pretty soon out of University and still living in NC. I had an informational interview at RKS and we...

Re: Shameless Train Appreciation Thread

this isn't so current, but maybe it's pointing to a revival of train use in the US: Warren Buffet's been quietly investing big in the US railway companies, and he's obviously had some investment foresight in the past. Warren Buffett's $5 Billion Railroad Stake Buffett sees strong rail system as key ...

Re: How did you start doing your own thing?

Just started a Limited Company in the UK... seems very similar to the US system with a couple of exceptions. Accountants are MUCH more expensive here, and just as critical to have for filings, etc. Like double the US rates I pay. There are not as many tax advantages (from what I understand now). The...

Re: 2012 Win8 Sketching Tablets

I saw another one in the CES lineup that looked like a good price for a sketch tablet... the Asus VivoTab Note 8, 8in windows 8 tablet with Wacom tech for $300. http://cdn-static.cnet.co.uk/i/c/blg/cat/ipad-tablets/asus-vivotab-note8.jpg http://crave.cnet.co.uk/laptops/asus-vivotab-note-8-windows-ta...

Re: What cell phone do you own?

Travisimo, you should talk to someone with a Lumia and WP8. Depends what your app needs are, but honestly the parity is greater than ever and Lumia hardware and design quality is iPhone level. They've even been doing curved glass edges for a few years before Apple is getting to it. It's just that o...

Re: What cell phone do you own?

It always blows me away how much mobile plans cost in the US.. I remember having an iPhone and paying about a hundred bucks a month.. Now I get grumpy when I have to pay 40 quid / $60 a month. Carriers are really milking consumers over there. So I've been looking for a new phone too. Had the Sony Ex...

Re: 2012 Win8 Sketching Tablets

You can actually get used to the smaller screen if you invest the time, but when you're jumping back and forth with a Cintiq - they might all feel cramped!

Re: 2012 Win8 Sketching Tablets

All very nice for the speeds-feeds and bigger screens... I have to say I do like the detachable keyboard on the older ATIV though but the screen feels so cramped!

Re: The A' design award competition

The advantage of the A Award is that you don't have to pay any fees if you do win. For example, if you win an IF award there are more than $2k in fees you have to then pay, on top of the entry fee of several hundred USD. The entry cost is fairly reasonable to0, at around ( £200GBP/$300USD for the ea...

Re: ghe-o rescue vehicle

I worked on some vehicles like this back in California.. the JLTV variations are a lot like those. That's "Joint Light Tactical Vehicle", the planned replacement for the Hummer. Super tough! http://defense-update.com/images_new1/jltv_bae_2.jpg Believe it or not, BAE were developing their version in ...
