Re: Foray in computational design - Parachute Phone Case

Love topology optimisation.

Years ago a designed a set of car wheels based on minimising their Moment of Inertia while maintaining strength. It's probably a common process now, but at the time I couldn't find any other record of people optimising for something more complex than minimum weight.

Re: A few thoughts on form

Haha cwatkinson, your first image had just enough of a reference to the modification of form for me to spend the next few minutes fruitlessly trying to work out how the other images related to determining form. @Jimbo, a rather excellent designer's variation on Blaise Pascal's quote "If I had more t...

Re: Come at me bro.

A quick way to improve the quality of your portfolio: Get someone to proof-read your writing and fix 'dem typos! For example: - "Design Sketching A few example s sketches" - "Plys" should be spelt "Plies" It sounds pedantic, but having a bunch of glaring spelling mistakes screams "lack of attention ...

Hi Pedro,

I'm not really in as good a position to provide feedback as Yo, but I thought I'd let you know that I love your aesthetic :)

Re: I think we have a spam problem

Yeah Chris I can only imagine what the pile of deleted posts that normal users never see must look like! I'm just thinking that your job might be a bit easier if it wasn't so easy for spammers to create new accounts in the first place - I could be wrong, but it feels like most of the spam accounts a...

I think we have a spam problem

I know it's not a new problem, but as I'm writing this post, the top of the discussion forum looks like this: http://i.imgur.com/3rqXc5p.png - Spam - Spam - Spam - Finally a proper post I moderate a forum myself, so I know that it's pretty unreasonable to expect moderators to find and delete spam po...

Re: Portfolio Review

Given your past experience and high quality work, I'm wondering if what's letting you down is how you present yourself during interviews (rather than *what* you present). It's unfortunate because we can't really critique it over the boards. However..... One of the most valuable things my university ...

Re: Am I fit to go into ID?

I did a Mechanical Engineering internship at a product design firm that specialised in complex medical devices. The Mechanical Design and Development team's role was somewhat unique in that it didn't advise on manufacturing etc (there was a whole different team for that), but instead did actual desi...

Re: What makes something beautiful?

The new Lexus design language is very novel, but it is not very beautiful, and as such I think it will date very quickly Beauty and novelty aside, do you consider the Lexus design language to be appealing to you in any way right now ? (Regardless of what you think your opinion of it will be in a de...

I may be wrong, but that photo on the second page looks like it was taken in the Holocaust Memorial in Berlin. While it's a great photo, maybe it would be more appropriate to find one from a less sombre setting?

Re: Are we ruining the world?

Reminds me of the opening line of Victor Papanek's Design for the Real World : There are professions more harmful than industrial design, but only a very few of them. He goes on: Today, industrial design has put murder on a mass-production basis. By designing criminally unsafe automobiles that kill ...

Re: Antimicrobial Materials for Plastic Injection Molding?

I will guarantee you will not find a single paper in pubmed that shows the use of copper lowering infections. And I really doubt you will ever see one. Killing in a petri dish is far different than killing in the real world. It's not from pubmed, but I think this article from Clinical Trials Week d...

Cost of implementing late-stage changes to a product

I recently came across a case study of a portable solar lamp designed for developing markets. Apparently, when they ran field trials of the device, it was discovered that there was a big demand for the capability to charge cell phones off the lamp - even people in the poorest countries on the planet...

Re: Philippe Starck on technology...

I'm not convinced that the iPad story is even true; apparently Jobs was a big proponent of minimising his kid's time on iPad and getting them to read books instead.
