Smart Pen

This hit a nerve for me. The majority of the products I've designed have had multiple people asking about bluetooth during development, in situations that absolutely don't call for it. I'm almost at the point where I feel I'm becoming biased about ever using bluetooth, period!

Re: Job Hunting Problems - Advice Needed!

Hey Jennifer, I'm in London right now as well, and it's definitely a competitive market! I wouldn't get discouraged after only 3 months, but it's definitely worth shaking up your approach and seeing if there's anything you can do to increase your response rate. What kinds of jobs are you looking for...

Re: Newly Released Work (All Product Types)

I worked on this over the summer, and it was just released at CES. A lot of the parts needed to be reused from the first Onewheel, but we managed to push through a bit of surfacing into the footpads and ends. There are a lot of serious technical improvements to the motor and electronics modules as w...

Re: Inspirational Design Shorts

I never knew Miyamoto was an industrial designer. Interesting part about how "Mr Video" was the first game at Nintendo to put the story before the mechanics.

Re: Immediate vs long-term UX

Thanks guys! This brings up a few further points I think: How do you approach "long-term" user testing? Is a week long enough for most products? I know from the C77 conference that Tesla does next to no user research, but I don't think BMW wants an unreleased car out in public so someone can live wi...

Immediate vs long-term UX

Hey guys, Wondering your thoughts on the trade-off between immediate understanding vs long term ease of use. Any examples that come to mind that illustrate the advantages of one over the other? I'm thinking about the door of my new car. For me, it has great long-term UX, but it's not great immediate...

Re: CLUG Mechanical Design

Thanks iab! I'll add in the POP and tradeshow stuff. I definitely did some work on the business end as well. Things like negotiating and coordinating sponsorships, managing inventory, meeting with investors, coordinating marketing, finding new retailers, and representing CLUG at cycling industry eve...

CLUG Mechanical Design

Hey guys! I'm back on the job hunt, and updating my portfolio. Luckily one of the projects I worked on was a Kickstarter project, and we were fairly open about our process, which means I can show almost everything! The project is up at: http://mcoyledesign.com/clug.html I could use some help with: *...

Re: What about an ID degree and pre-engineering background?

Hey jrl, My job title is "mechanical designer" (some call it "design engineer") and is pretty much what you described. Somewhere in between industrial design and engineering. I pursued the position for pretty much the same reasons you describe. My degree is in engineering, but that was only because ...

Re: Too Many Sketch Journeys

it's apparent to me that the skill of sketching is THE most important to develop for ideation, communication and presentation Welcome to the boards Luke! I've been trying to stay out of this thread, but I think this illustrates what some of the designers "against" sketching were trying to get at. I...

Was looking through the events listing for IDSA Seattle and found this page: http://www.idsa.org/sites/default/files ... 150428.pdf

Lots of overlap with this thread, maybe they saw it and added your suggestions ;)

Re: Advice for Young Design Engineer

Hey Louis, Are you looking mostly for in-house or consultancy in SF? Either way I would highlight your engineering side a lot more in your portfolio. Unless you're going to go back to school for ID, the environment is so competitive down there, that I think you're better off presenting yourself as a...
