Re: Post why YOU design

For me the reason of why I design is simple - I was lucky enough to be granted some innate skills that I've been lucky to grow into a career where I can use them full-time - drawing, story-telling, problem-solving, creating, building, etc. For me, I had my selfish years when I was doing more consume...

Re: Getting fired from an ID job

I've never been 'fired' from an ID job, but have been let go (or un-retained...;p) for business reasons. I moved to a new city and was at this company for almost 2 years before the owner decided he was tired of the churn of fee-for-service work. What followed was a 1-year drawn-out winding-down of t...

Re: Transferring school from CCS

Linked in just rated CCS in the top 5 ID schools in the country. Based on careers of alumni. CCA and Ohio state are not on there. My alma mater, CMU, is top on the list! Every 'best of' list is completely subjective and subject to the whims or what lens they are being looked at thru. That being sai...

Re: Feeling uninspired

I agree with the above advice to go out and get a change in perspective. I also find that changing up my medium of design can un-stick me sometimes. Do a lot of Cintiq-based work? Break out the paper and pens...on 3D software? Go get some foam/cardboard/wood/paper and build instead.

Re: Experience vs Portfolio

Experience can be represented many ways - visual (being literal) is merely one way. Relying solely on visuals caters to more of a 'beauty contest' in essence, in presenting yourself - either they think your work is 'pretty' or they won't. That is only one component of telling them about you, the des...

Ah!

Had I looked at Core77 yesterday, I could have met you for a pint at The Happy Gnome or The Republic.

If MN-based design folk (or passers-through) want to get together, I'm always open...

Re: Industrial Design: RISD or SAIC???

I cannot speak for SAIC, but I can tell you tangents about my experience with RISD grads and some recent news. Traditionally, RISD seems to foster a sense of entrepreneurship with its grads. Grads seem to really have a 'can do' and 'make it happen' attitude - very attractive to folks who are looking...

Re: 13

Hulk;

The only thing keeping me from buying the 24HD Touch was cost - I found a great deal on a almost new 24HD from Craigslist, and couldn't justify spending another grand for a new touch.

That being said, if I tried one first, I may have fallen in love...

Re: 13

Hulk; Hopefully I'm understanding your question right; I use Photoshop and Illustrator religiously without any problems. The key for me was to set up a custom set of controls for each app for the buttons/surfaces on the Cintiq. I use the toggle buttons to select brush size, zoom and rotate, and then...

Re: 13

Depends what you want to use it for, and the format for creating your work. I have a 24HD (not touch) and love it - it represents basically an 11x17 sheet of paper in a 1:1 size. Most of the concept work I and my office creates is in that format. I love all of the working space available to me. The ...

Re: Adding plastic/ removing from mold

What he means is the equation to be metal safe, add plastic to part - metal safe = add plastic. By adding thickness to your part, you will be machining metal away to accomplish it. The converse is true - to make thinner walls or removing a plastic feature, you will need to weld, fill, grind and re-f...

Re: Mech. Engineer Career Path Advice

Nico; Congrats on your degree. I have found in the past, that there is a lot of 'grey' area between traditional design and traditional engineering. We have had IDers that have migrated closer to ME, (some partially, or others fully) and have had some MEers that have done the same with respect to ID....

Re: what skill to hone to become a designer

The short answer is there are no short answers. It comes down to what sort of designer do you want to be, and what would you like to design? There are some basic skills (in my opinion) that any designer should have, but from there, your focus area will define other skills you will need to have - i.e...
