Re: Surfacing and Industrial Design

The surfacing guys who are sharp are the ones pushing the envelope of what the CAD tools can do. Generative design, Grasshopper, VR studio and algorithms are additional areas where this specialty CAD niche gets resources to experiment. You really need to identify what manufacturing technologies you ...

Re: Daughter wants design&enginering, where are programs?

The University of Minnesota has a new program that includes all of the desired aspects of what your daughter is looking for in a Product Design program. The program is new and draws faculty from CCS, MIT, University of Cincinnati, University of Texas and University of Missouri. Classes are 60 - 70% ...

Re: Getting hired as freelancer through social media.

Is anyone getting jobs through Instagram/Facebook/etc? Is there anyone looking for candidates there as well? A good designer will know about how to speak about their work in a way that they do not give confidential information away or prop up their work by dropping names or referencing unsubstantia...

Re: When can I expect to start making decent money?

At what point does an employer start valuing my skills and feeling lucky to have me, instead of acting like they’re doing me a favor? Design is cool and all but being this poor is really, really difficult and it’s starting to take a toll on me. Is there a brighter future ahead or are salaries in th...

Re: "Things are going digital"

What I am seeing now with GenZ here in Korea is that they have grown up 100 % digital and are now just beginning to explore the physical world. The complete opposite of generations before them. It is a game changer that is moving away from pure dematerialized digital lifestyles. wow, super interest...

Re: "Things are going digital"

If you are just beginning to observe that "things are going digital" in my estimates you are about 5 years behind the leading edge. What I am seeing now with GenZ here in Korea is that they have grown up 100 % digital and are now just beginning to explore the physical world. The complete opposite of...

Re: Students Hard at Work

The following project image is a presentation from one of the 3rd year students I worked with in their 1st semester of their 3rd year here in Seoul. The course is Industrial Design 2. They are challenged to tie together many of the skill sets they have been working on for the past 3 years. Design br...

Re: Students Hard at Work

Let us know how their ideas translate into the physical world. Will you be doing any prototyping of their concepts? I find the millenials and genZ kids are weaker in the uptake of proto skills due to their saturated time spent with computers.

The vape industry trade shows in Shanghai are so huge! East Asia does not have the legacy of the 70s USA stoner culture, so the design challenge is different in the east Asian markets. Anyone who has used a pinch hitter to conceal, transport, load, toke and optimize the problem of 2nd hand smoke wil...

There is no better place to be than in SF after Labor day. The tourist crowds are gone, the kids are back in school and a relaxing vibe settles across the entire bay area. I just returned to Seoul from a week in SF with my wife. For sunsets: Grizzly Peak Blvd in Claremont Hills or anywhere along the...

Cyberdemon...Yes HF labs are good for studying what is possible in a controlled environment. I think there is something in the future with the combining of Lasik surgery and VR/AR. The growth of the surgery centers targeting those in their 20s here in Seoul is through the roof. For those interested ...

Re: Oculus Rift and Industrial Design

All valid arguments above. However, it cannot be ignored the condition known as Presbyopia. This middle age condition that hardens the eye's lens and causes near field object to appear out of focus is the reason and problem that faces the nascent field of VR and AR. When we see Oculus, Samsung, Aveg...

https://designsymbiosisblog.files.wordpress.com/2017/07/20170710_144326.jpg?w=625 I snapped this photo recently on a trip to NYC. Samsung has a newish technology showroom in Greenwich Village where they are pushing the VR tech quite largely. I left the experience feeling a little sheepish and wiser...
