Re: When can I expect to start making decent money?

A big point might be whether you are looking at corporate (in-house) vs. consultancy also. I can’t think of any big companies that would offer 35k but it sounds believable for a small design company. If you can find an in-house design place you like, that can help a lot in this area.

Re: Help with Form Development

This is a awesome thread. Form development is obviously huge to what we do but it can be a bit esoteric for a lot of discussions and is barely covered by any design blogs in depth, so it's nice to see it pop up in some more detail here.

All of the Erlich / Jian Yang interaction scenes are pure gold.

Coroflot troubleshooting - How to fully extend an image

Hi Core, I am having some difficulty while using the "descender" theme and getting images to scale correctly. Image 1 is pretty large vertically (1600 px * ~3400 px), and the image scales down when it is viewed on the page. I would like it to extend all the way, like "Image 2" is correctly doing. Im...

Re: Apple iPad Pro and Pencil

Thanks sketchstone, dizzytara's brushes looks good. Will have to give them a shot. I have gotten into the annoying habit of having a new "favorite" pencil preset every week or so, with all the tweakability that is possible (same as on a PC with a Cintiq). Lame as it is in 2016, I ended up cutting th...

Re: The back of the 2016 Prius: What Were They Thinking?

I'm guessing that they had dozens of cleaner, more-resolved designs but someone higher up in the food chain chose this direction, and the team was stuck with it! I sympathize with the designers if this is the case.

Re: Do you use layers in Illustrator?

I don't think AI layers are as essential as Photoshop groups and organization, but still nice and don't really take that much longer to set up than otherwise. Likeb building a Solidworks model cleanly, you will appreciate it later down the road. However, it is just too cruel that one of the AI layer...

I particularly like the low table in your last post! :)

Thanks for sharing.
Agreed, that last one is very nice!

Re: The Napkin Sketch in a Portfolio

There is definitely a place for them, as long as they aren't your sole images as Yo said also. I know designers that almost draw exclusively like this (very fast single-line contour drawings) but still come up with great subtleties in form. If you overlay enough of them in a composition like this, i...

Re: photos of a mall in 1989

Thank you for posting this! If you can still find a mall like these, there is no better way to see so much Memphis-inspired design in one place.

And that big-screen TV with the $2400 price tag ... ouch.

Re: doodling

Fun stuff as always! Jboogie I really like those bags. A work friend let me try out Procreate on his iPad Pro with the pencil and I was blown away... I had seen it mentioned here but hadn't tried sketching on a tablet all that much. This was better than the Cintiq by a long shot. The pressure sensit...

Re: Most Used / Most Important Design Software

Also Microsoft Programs Outlook, Word, Excel Adding to this, OneNote... very handy to have a page for each project rather than trying to rely on physical sketchbook (e.g. if I need to flip back and find a Pantone code from half a year ago) and images are a lot easier to include than Word. SolidWork...

Re: Rendering Software for Solidworks

I just downloaded Blender and have been playing with it for a couple hours. The "Cycles Renderer" that they have packaged in is amazing. Thanks moczys for mentioning. You are correct that .STL seems like the only way to import Solidworks unfortunately ... but then again, Keyshot was never too good a...

To my untrained eye, it is the best of the Ford Fusion, Mazda, Hyundai combined. Some Aston Martin Db9 thrown in too. I love it.

Re: Advice to improve my sketching on an Intuos 5

I had tried to use the Intuos for a 2-3 years like you are saying and could never get the hang of it. I ended up biting the bullet after graduating and getting the 13HD and have not looked back. I wish I got something like that early on in college. Of course, everyone's mileage may vary, but -- Comp...
