Re: "Gut" and Design

I updated my post above to fit your paradigm (which I do agree with). It's interesting to see that the word "gut" has two very different but meanings related to emotion, as in "He has guts to do that crazy stunt!" vs "I have a gut feeling that we should go in this direction". I think Gut (instinct) ...

Re: "Gut" and Design

I think Gut (instinct) vs Logic (Why) can be distinguished by this, like most things in life, it is not "black and white" but instead a spectrum: A. Testable - These are design decisions that can be tested. These are the design items that take logic , work, and sweat. If you can test it, it doesn't ...

Re: fitting in non-design friendly workplaces

I am a degreed engineer, one with tons of respect for designers. In this vertically integrated business world in which we operate, design is one of the few disciplines that is difficult to outsource to India or China (if designing for the US market). In general, the more technical or "black and whit...

Re: Need your help with this job title...

This job opening is definitely not for a degreed "engineer". Most engineers don't know surfacing well and even if they did know surfacing for technical applications, they don't have a practical aesthetic sense for product design. We are an automotive performance parts company that wants to raise bar...

Need your help with this job title...

Here is a job description that I am currently building. I would like your input on what you think the job title would be as well as any other insight. Just in case it is relevant, the job opening is near Corona, California (Norco). Here it is so far: -------------------------------------------------...

Re: Pet projects - Non-compete

Often, the contracts are generic, so you can negotiate with them to modify it. For example, if the contract is for a $2000 project to design a "dog house that looks like igloo". You can narrow the scope of the non-compete to "dog houses that look like igloos". It would be ridiculous for the igloo cl...

Re: New Design leaders....

In any particular market, as technology matures and spreads, a company's once technological advantage becomes merely me too. In all these examples, these 2nd tier companies are in technologically saturated segments, meaning they have now acquired the majority of the foundational technology that thei...
