Re: Undergrad ID @ Georgia Tech?

Just a few additions to SHIELDS' comments. I went through Tech as an Electical Engineer, and then again as a Master's student in ID. That took about 8 years. Actually, Georgia Tech has one of the *oldest* industrial design programs in the US, although certainly the program is not very big compared t...

Re: Drawing! Is it overrated?

I think of the subject this way: How are my ideas affected by the limitations of my tools? If I do a quick sketch/Illustrator linework/nice render/volume model/CAD study I get a different result, a different time commitment, and a different answer to my questions. I think that we're all subliminally...

Re: Georgia Tech MID - visit impression

I went through Tech's MID program (I have an engineering background) and your assessment is pretty spot-on regarding the areas you were able to visit. Georgia Tech is a bit of a tough school for graduate level ID in that you really have to be VERY proactive in determining what you want to get out of...

Re: Let's talk about your mobile devices (phone, tablet, PMP

I kept cellphone technology to a minimum in my life up for a long time. For YEARS I carried around a variant of the the iconic Nokia candybar model, the 3510. I could navigate through that phone without even looking at it, and none of the options were more than a couple clicks deep. What I remember ...

Re: Brands vs Religion

The superbrand concept is definitely interesting - I would like to see the 'religion' superbrand compared against another large cultural phenomenon and see if that has the effect of suppressing brand loyalty. My first gut reaction was with the environmentally aware demographic, but I actually doubt ...

Re: Commission based freelance contracts

My consulting firm works with inventors pretty frequently, and we NEVER extend credit/commissions to inventor clients. We do this only with established companies, and our agreements are often like the one you mention at the end - a reduced fixed fee for a royalty on the final product. We generally o...

Re: Creating jobs

The problem with serving low budget inventors is, most of them don't have any realistic view of what it takes and lack the real money needed to get there. Individual inventors often require a lot of hand holding and support time too. You probably won't make enough money to pay yourself and your tea...

Re: Help with workflow?

I just want to say everyone's encouragement and help have REALLY helped me, even in the short term. I've actually been a lot more enthusiastic this week, and was super productive yesterday and today without feeling too harassed! Some of the biggest things were managing my time well at the very begin...

Re: Help with workflow?

This December marks my first full year. It has definitely been hard but I have had some successful moments. I've been able to develop some new processes for how we quote work and how we educate our salespeople ( not in a vacuum of course, but I brought things together). I still haven't quite gotten ...

Re: post grad education cost/benefits?

Most people use the Masters as a vehicle for career change (as opposed to career advancement so common in other professions). I have a MID, and this is primarily what I used it for. I have an engineering degree but discovered ID midstream, and decided to complete both before moving into the working...

Re: Help with workflow?

I do make a habit of getting in early - that's a lot easier on me mentally than staying late, and it's quiet time to get my mind in order before I have to direct others. These are all great suggestions, I appreciate all the help. I'm still somewhat new at this, and it's challenging in ways I didn't ...

chevisw: Heh, thanks for spending your allotting forum reply time on me! I'm definitely getting to the point where I value things like that. Thanks for your very practical thoughts. We definitely do some of them - we have Monday meetings too, and that's where we get everyone together and make sure n...

Re: Help with workflow?

Zierlabs: We have about 35 people (6 are IDs, the rest are engineers, misc.). I only have 3 direct reports, but I'm responsible for managing the workflow of all the IDs to a degree. I also work with our engineering groups and participate in sales activity, mostly on framing proposals and providing t...

Help with workflow?

So, I'm the ID director/senior ID/project manager/intern herder at my firm. I'm struggling with juggling it all. My Friday is a perfect example... I had no more than 20 minutes of uninterrupted design time the whole day, which is basically nothing. If I wasn't helping rework an intern's idea I was b...
