Re: Protecting my IP while getting something produced in China

Amunta has some really good points. Unfortunately, as a small fish there's not much you can do if a supplier starts selling your stuff. Having the patents (especially utility) will help you if a decent sized company starts to sell the counterfeit stuff outside of China. However, there's not a lot yo...

Re: Inspirational Design Shorts

Graphic designer Aaron Draplin recently made his Skillshare classes on logo design and customizing type available on his youtube page: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6vORHZU-0uS937hH8ZgIDA/videos Here's an example: 5lh6etgDOAI Besides the obvious graphic design lessons, I think there are some les...

Re: Tent Prototype

Well tensile structures is a bit of a shortcut :P . Really, we design rope based playground equipment! http://www.dynamoplaygrounds.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/play-matters-banner.jpg While we share a lot of the problems of tensile fabric structures which mainly revolve around morphing an idea fo...

Re: Tent Prototype

As iab mentioned, different material properties might lead to a significantly different shape. Besides stretch, I would also be worried about the weight of the material. Especially as you're dealing with a flexible frame. Depending on your experience doing this and the complexity of the product, you...

Re: Mimitens Independent Designer vs. Big Brand

I think very few on here will take Mimiten's side on this one... It's a cool idea but I doubt the current legal landscape would allow to protect it. Firstly, I doubt a patent would be granted for it as there surely is prior art on this (never mind other criteria for a utility patent). A design paten...

Re: CAD Render-Rama

Thanks Michael. You're right, getting shoes to feel like shoes is a bit of a struggle, the materials are hard to match, the shape is also tricky. I don't really see the day photography gets kicked out in that field. Very fair criticisms though. It might have been a bit of a case of "when a hammer is...

Maybe a design for accessibility brief would give you something beyond just a styling exercise.

Reminds me of this thread:

Re: CAD Render-Rama

I've been spending a lot of time building a computational design portfolio. Here's my latest render. A NASA inspired snow boot. As a kid, I always thought snow boots were the closest thing to astronaut boots!

Also, I added some noise on there like the kids do these days. :P

Re: Daughter wants design&enginering, where are programs?

Hey there, I'm an ME with a serious slant for design. There's a few things that may need to be looked at in what she's looking for in a job. For one, there are few jobs that allow an ME to dig down to human centred design, market research and such. On the flip side, there are few ID job that allow t...

Re: avoid draft angle

Only briefly looked at the Apple one, they're looking at making the cylindrical body of something like the Apple pencil. It looks like they're purposely having the part shrink and cling onto the the centre core of their mold. Where they got clever is that the centre core is actually made of two part...

Here's an Adidas Iniki runner. I've been digging the mix of new and retro on the shoe. I was thinking back at the old coretoons. I always liked his scruffy cell shaded / hard brush look.

Re: Compensation on a design

Don't think about it as a design fee but as a sales margin. If you've done the design work and someone is looking at putting "orders" for the first two, you're not providing design services, you're an urban furniture company (even if you're outsourcing the actual manufacturing), congrats. You don't ...
