Re: Info Viz Tools

I mentioned many tools, there are examples for each tool on the net. Propose a specific requirement for a visualization of data and I will propose an approach for the PS scripting solution. Hey, thanks for the reply. Let me work through an example and I'll get back to you. I found this today: http:...

Re: Info Viz Tools

One more thought, the scripting languages that are built into photoshop and illustrator are the best kept secrets. You could have PS read a file of information and plot out the points to the extents of your imagination. Pretty much any operation can be accessed and scripted with a variety of langua...

Re: Building a Brand

two other strategies you could try would be to identify and break down the design & brand language of the major competitors, then look for opportunity areas where no other brands currently exist. Something like the red ocean / blue ocean strategy . You could do this on aesthetics, brand personality...

Re: Photo Realistic Renderings

Totally depends on your definition of photoreal. Using a solidworks model is going to get you a photoreal bottle of a CAD tool shape. What that bottle looks like in real life after it's be manufactured is going to be totally different. I would completely remodel in a polygon app and use something b...

Glass Bottle Design & Manufacture

Hi Guys. I'm about to start a project with a client designing a custom glass spirit bottle. This is a new process for me, so I'm looking for some good information on the manufacturing constraints/technical parameters, any tips for prototyping, shapes to avoid design wise etc. Plus any experiences pe...

Re: interpreting complex organic forms in 3d cad

One quick point to note - is we were never after an absolute identical replication. the cleint wanted to retain as much of that hand sculpted/natural feel as possible. So while we were 99% faithful to the original, we did have the opportunity to work our own artistic touch to the model.... just smal...

Re: interpreting complex organic forms in 3d cad

How did you handle minimizing perspective distortion when photographing orthographic shots for lining up with your viewports in Modo? As above longest lens / max focus. I used the Canon 70-200mm on my 7D which gives you a 35mm equivalent of 320mm. For sure the photography can only take you so far (...

Re: interpreting complex organic forms in 3d cad

I wanted to weigh in on this discussion a few days ago - but got distracted with work...What your looking to do is quite similar to a project I completed recently. The project involved taking this: http://bonasera.com.au/uploadedFiles/1224674791926-9130.jpg organic form and reproducing it in 3D with...

Re: So, this kind of upset me

Is it just me or does this offend your sense of integrity as a designer? I thought we worked hard for the last 5 decades to show that what we do is more than this, and then an advert for essentially enclosures with free ID is on a design website... http://www.core77.com/blog/object_culture/you_desi...

Re: Client habits

Yeah some of my clients balk at a measly $500 when it makes them oodles in PR and save them in photography. I guess I run into a lot of cheapskate start-ups who don't have a realistic view of what things cost at consultancies. One guy even said to me, it's "easy" for you as a reason not to charge. ...

Re: Client habits

The easy answer is No. The hard answer, Yes. What does your agreement state ? Are they asking because you haven't stated how many shots your going to give them ? Are you giving a fixed priced for X amount of shots, or charging hourly ? If it's fixed price, for a fixed no. of shots then a simple * Ex...
