Senior Career Advice

I have been in the industrial design field for about 15 years. I have recently come to crossroads where I am losing passion or faith in my desired occupation. In the past 10 years, I have been laid off at my last three positions due to the economy, company financial troubles, or partnerships not wor...

Re: Experienced industrial designers, we need your stories!

Design by Committee...I have hundreds of 'em. Most end in finger pointing at the design department when they fail. My favorite brief anecdote involves a teleconference involving a critique of a museum display and the height of an information board containing historical text. Me: So, the height of th...

Design implementation through crowdsourcing

Had this little spot forwarded to me by a colleague. I thought it was an interesting read and idea. It pertains to allowing the consumers to choose the designs they would like to see in stores rather than the hits and misses of department buyers (or whims). The little video at the bottom is amusing ...

Re: Rhino 5 - worth the upgrade?

Thanks! I ordered it and am waiting for the disk to show up. I forgot I always seem to need the WIP on OSX to open DWGs from Autocad now. I miss Solidworks sometimes, the parametrics mainly. Still, with Rhino and a decent rendering package, It's still a very good bargain. I sprung for Flamingo when ...

Rhino 5 - worth the upgrade?

I am looking at the new features and have watched some of the videos on Rhino 5. I am currently using the latest 4.x version on Win64 and have tried 5.0 on OSX. I am trying to decide if it is worth the upgrade. I like some of the workflow improvements. There is also a price jump after next week. If ...

I use Travis' system. I round to the nearest 1/2 hour. I also look at my phone logs a lot. I seem to spend a lot of time on the phone.

Re: Software for Concept Work

The Wacom tablet + Photoshop is certainly a good combination to render. If you want photorealistic renderings, Rhino + Keyshot is a great, somewhat inexpensive combination ($1800). I have never really been fond of Flamingo, Rhino's native renderer. YMMV.

Re: Inductive Stylus for Ipad ??? Or Cintiq, still

I have a Cintiq 12 ux here at home and it doesn't have the sensitivity of the bigger 21" I had with my previous employer. It does work well for I use it for and the price was pretty good. I may look for a used 21" this year and try to sell the 12". The freelance work I have done with it has paid for...

Re: Vehicles spotted in your neighborhood

I was able to test drive a Tesla S tonight. 40kw version. In regular mode, it feels like a larger Lexus sedan. Setting the car to 'sport' and the air ride to 'low', it felt on par with a BMW. On first impression, the car is BIG! The details are all there for the luxury segment. The interior is fanta...

Re: Is it ok to contact HR to see what they look for in a re

HR is not your friend or buddy. Doing something unorthodox isn't going to win you and cred, so be careful about how you present yourself and your intentions. You build you contacts through other design professionals, business people, engineers, etc. HR is sort of the gatekeeper or filter for the com...

Re: solidworks license

Solidworks, pre '10 release, had a floating license option using their network licensing. Essentially, you could use the software on any computer in the network it was installed on, but the same license or 'seat' couldn't be used at the same time. Cyberdemon is correct, you can write off the softwar...

Re: Yummy car photography

I do miss the car culture of SOCAL the most. Banging around the canyons of LA on early Saturday or Sunday morning, the car meets, the styles. Don't see much of that on the east coast.
