Re: How to start an online design store?

It is possible to start a design store with combination of strong branding and dedicated customers.

Here is an example : a design store was started in Dublin, Ireland during the last recession : https://shop.designist.ie/

Re: Designer To Entrepreneur

The transition from designer to entrepreneur entirely depends on what kind of business you want to do. The biggest questions you have to ask is : - do you want to sacrifice quality of life for personal freedom to do whatever you want? - if somebody else has created the same idea that you have, would...

Re: Are we ruining the world?

Designers are not ruining the world. The economy is. We are doing our jobs mostly to service the economy. Most people in this forum probably had at least one good environmentally or socially conscious idea, but they didn't get it through to production, because they had to do something else to make r...

I'm going to Munich in a couple of days. Is there anything interesting to see there that is design-related? I've already booked BMW museum and design museum too.

Is Pinterest a good tool for spotting design opportunities?

Pinterest shows things that people like and enjoy. It may not show the complete truth, but the amount of trending content is big enough to gain some insights. Does this make it a good platform for spotting latest opportunities for design?

Re: Design thinking fatigue

The problem I found with methodologies is that you have to work around them. That applies to design thinking methods as well. When I was trying to use them in college, there were always discussions around whether we were using those methods correctly. The thing is, they are ambiguous - you can alway...

Are design competitions as good as their judges?

After reading this blog : http://thatsflawesome.com/2012/11/24/electrolux-is-the-worst-design-competition-there-is/ I started to wonder whether design competitions like this are of any value to students and recent graduates. I can see the big idea : technology driven by human needs. There is always ...

Re: Is design education a better business than design itself

Ah, yes, I see what you mean. I agree. Can we design a better design process - or a pre-design process? :) It is quite possible, and some tools are being developed to evaluate the disruptive potential of new businesses / products / designs : http://growthsci.com/ Ideally I think that it would be gr...

Is design education a better business than design itself?

In the industry, those who practise design have to sell their skills to an incredible extent and put up an enormous fight just to get a client. Basically, if you look at the large picture from average point of view, you have to fight for a client. However, in education it's a different picture. Ther...

Thanks a lot for your reply. I haven't defined enough parameters in my question, but you have put me on a good enough path to answer my question. Consider this thread to be closed, unless you want to add something to it

When will this design dictatorship ever end?

The principles of traditional industrial design are geared towards mass production. So that means making copies of the same product that all look roughly the same. Let's take an example of cheap budget cars. Some brands and makes all look the same. The only difference is colour. People can easily st...

Re: Technique vs. Design

If you want to resolve the debate between technique and design, you have to consider who are the stakeholders in the product and the "ecosystem" around it. Whether technique or the design should be the ultimate factor really depends on the ultimate end goal of the product. In the case of musical ins...

Re: a question for Design Gatekeepers

Can a design business be built purely on the strength of an initial prototype? Do prototypes excite manufacturers and clients enough to make the product itself? Or do you need a strong network of people and several years' worth of track record to launch a design business?
