Re: Puma, Nike, and Pyrex...

I think it's also interesting how companies such as http://www.habitat.co.uk/ have started adding technical / materials information about the products as sales copy... "Powder coated metal table lamp with a single jointed slim stem. The adjustable angular head and single joint allow light to be dire...

Re: Toy Site Links

Suprised not to see http://sketchatoy.blogspot.com/ on here, unless I missed it? http://www.toydesignserved.com/ - quite nice for styling inspiration http://www.toynews-online.biz/ - (and licensing biz is pretty useful to keep up to date with http://www.licensing.biz/) Lets add some British into the...

Re: CAD program in Toy Design

So do most other people use CAD in toy design? We outsource all of ours, at first I thought this strange as there feels like a lack of control. But due to the volume of projects running simultaneously and a very quick turnaround it makes sense for us to brief this out , I don't think we would be abl...

Re: BABY KEYS *quickie 3-hr project*

As long as there's nothing sharp and there's nothing chemically wrong with the metal (i.e nickel content) then there's no QA issue with metal keys. The only issue you may want to consider is passing the rattle gauge test if aiming these at under 10 months (check out EN 71 part one or ASTM F963). Nic...

Re: The day I thought would never come... the interview

Thanks! Ross: There's nothing worse than waiting, knowing you don't have any control over the situation! You're obviously making an impression at interviews though, hopefully now the economy is picking up one of the companies will land heaps of work and will turn to you for employment. Keep the upda...

Re: This unemployment is driving me mad... I just don't get

Are using this Picasa album (http://picasaweb.google.com/variant1/PortfolioRyanRMiller#) as your portfolio? If you've been 'down and out for 18+ months' what do you have to show for it? Lets see what you've been working on in that time and what projects and development to your portfolio you have to ...

Re: The day I thought would never come... the interview

Ross, I'm sorry to hear that you received that news. At least they liked you, and there's still the possibility of contacting you when they receive more work. I guess it's all good practice, did you ask for feedback after the interview? I thought I'd update, I went to my second interview, which went...

Re: The day I thought would never come... the interview

I'm sorry to hear that you didn't get the job, but with that sort of feedback is it really a job you'd want? It seems very un-constructive for feedback. I'm guessing this was for a junior role, and surely junior roles are about learning the things that university couldn't teach you, such as IP issue...

Re: The day I thought would never come... the interview

Congratulations on getting another interview! If you already have a lot of work based on in depth research then I'd say definitely take your ID portfolio along, just make sure to emphasise the research stages. Good luck! I had my interview yesterday, which went ok, except for making a few silly nerv...

Licencing, product partners... what does it all mean?!

Hi, I'm very interested in a career in toy design but am confused about how the industry works. I've done a lot of research and have found it quite difficult to differentiate between distributors and companies that actually design toys. How does licencing work within the toy industry? Is it a case o...

Re: The day I thought would never come... the interview

Sorry to hear that you didn't get the job p waddy. Looks like things are starting to pick up a bit though, with a few more junior roles around. At least it was good practice for future interviews. I guess it's that push to continue improving skills and working on new projects for the next interview....

Re: The day I thought would never come... the interview

Hey p waddy, congratulations, on your interview. Definitely makes sense to have similar questions on the same thread anyway! Did you know that you had to be in court the day before when you accepted the interview? I guess it's best to turn up on top form so maybe worth a call? Mrtwills, thanks, I ha...

The day I thought would never come... the interview

Hi, So I graduated in 2008 and apart from a seven month adventure exploring the world and some freelance work (graphics, brand and web) I have been working non stop to improve my portfolio, website, projects, cover letter to find that all illusive first Junior Product Design role. It now seems that ...
