Re: Is NURBS on the decline for ID?

SolidWorks is NOT a Surface modeler. It may have surface tools but they are not at the level that Rhino or Alia is at. Surfaces in SolidWorks is to simply help with the solid modeling process. NURBS gives you the freedom to tweak the surface freely. SolidWorks tried to get into that realm with the F...

Re: easier to learn ProE or Solidworks?

SolidWorks is much easier to learn. Pro E is more popular with big companies. If you want to get into Automotive Design or Aerospace than you are better off with Pro E but it requires more equation defining than SolidWorks.

Re: Finding a mouse for 3d is such a pain!

What are you needing the scroll wheel for? if it is using the third button feature that rotates your view than you might want to think about buying a space navigator instead of a mouse. You can usually find a USB cabled one on ebay for around $120 dollars. It will free up your commands and make you ...

Re: work faux paus missing the bbq

At least play on the company softball team. There is a thin line about enough socialization and too much. If the secretary is a jabber jaws, than try to avoid getting in long drawn out conversations because you don't want people thinking that you are too busy talking to work. Grab a few people you w...

Re: Best way to organize project folders?

For SolidWorks Files we use the PDM Works Vault system. It has it's own place on a server and helps mediate who has rights to edit models and drawings and keeps a history of who did what, when. For our reference material, we have a project folder with sub categories like, systems, mechanical, electr...

just wait until you have a assembly that takes 3 months to complete and three more months to actually get everything to jive properly.

Patience is a CAD Jockey's best friend and worst enemy.

Re: CAD work

Companies usually follow a standard. It will usually be ANSI or ASME. I have not done CAD work on the side but if it is a small company they will probably be ok with a different method as long as you state it on the drawing . For Example; NOTES: 1. APPLICABLE STANDARDS/SPECIFICATIONS: INTERPRET DRAW...

Re: What companies will want to hire me?

Thanks Mr-914. I received approval to show some of my work in my portfolio. I will gather up a Technical section of my portfolio and display it for criticism.

Re: How to do this?

Brett, With the last photo I see all of the surfaces that you created to build the shape. I thought that you could trim the surfaces using intersecting surfaces until the outside of the chair was complete and then solid knit the entire piece together. I am not sure if that was your process but that ...

Finally!

The thing that killed me about Photoworks is that there was no way to really edit settings or material maps.

Re: Solid work or alias

SolidWorks does have Surface modeling but it is really there to assist the Parametric modelling. The double edged sword is that for it to be effective it needs to be fully defined which makes it tedious but is also good for future changes that need to be made to the model because of tolerance, manuf...

Re: Questions about my first job opportunity.

Freelance or Contract work is a great way for companies to get a sense of you without fully committing. Full employment is expensive and the firing process can be a paperwork nightmare and many companies would rather test you out instead of taking a huge chance. They know you just graduated and do n...

Re: Ever have a potential employer give you a TEST

My company might not ask for you to come up with a concept but we are now starting to ask people to come in and take a test in the program they say they are proficient in. We have been burned many times by people lying on their resumes and a lot of the time myself or someone else has to clean up or ...

Re: What companies will want to hire me?

If I can't see you complete something that you assign yourself based on your personal passion and commitment, how can I trust you to to complete something that is assigned to you at a high level? You have to demonstrate your ability to follow through at least to a point where the idea is more compl...

You love learning, but dont get better at sketching because you dont want to master it? i hope i am misunderstanding. I might have written that for misinterpretation. My constant need for learning and idea concept makes personal projects difficult so they never go into a finished look stage until I...
