Re: Prep a file for a stratasys J750: wrap a high res image to o

@Charles...if you have at least Solidworks Professional or Premium then use the Solidworks Visualize and then do the texturing there and export the model as an (.obj). Then, and this is key, make sure to have the option turned on in GrabCAD Print, in the preference--->GrabCad Labs to enable the text...

Re: Learning Solidworks for ID

In the long run SW and Rhino are on the same side of the coin when it comes to 3D modeling in terms of the base approach. Sketch, Surface, Extrude....take away some material add what's needed. As you've noted the tree is your best enemy and worse friend at the same time. Build things right and SW si...

Re: Beginner tutorials for Alias (Rhino) users

The purpose of a beginner tutorial is not to show off how fast and clever you are, but go carefully through the motions for the benefit of the novice. Snazzy trickery and copious shortcutting comes later. Any proper design pedagogue knows - when the teacher tries to be the smartest guy in the room,...

Re: Keyshot Export - STL / ZPR

(.STL) files do not carry color for 3DP. Also you model needs to have the bodies touching but not overlapping so that the different materials/colors can be used in the J750. Download the software for the J750 from GrabCad....called GrabCad Print. This way you can test out the files, even prepare the...

Re: Methods in Solidworks

There are quite a few presentation that you can pull down on these, among others, to choose from "Solidworks world presentations". That said good file management is paramount is going to key no matter which method is chosen. Top Down, Bottom Up, or Master Model. Some tips to keep in the back of your...

Re: "Budget" Cad prodgrams

Thanks for the help everyone! I definitely get the point in investing a little more upfront in Solidworks but even the basic license is USD 8000 here in Scandinavia :( I downloaded Fusion 360 to try it out and I think I could get everything done in it although I did get quite a few bugs when doing ...

Re: Alias modeling question

Gotta say that zBrush and Modo are right now some of the most accessible and powerful SubD modelers out right now add in GoZ and the two softwares talk to each other so designs update. zBrush definitely has some vooodooo magic under the under hood that requires keeping track of high polygon geometri...

Re: Modeling and Rendering Floppy Materials

As pointed out this can be done with Blender but you will have to dive in heavily with regards to the new interface, UI....etc. One alternative is Modo which does have a dynamic system in it and can definitely render WAY better than Keyshot any day of the week.

Re: Software for a Student

Power SubD Export.jpg @Mrog: Got cha....though I think there's a bit of some faulty footing you're on with regards to data translation. If I bring said "light weight" NURBS into say Modo or zBrush then you are going to see that the same "heaviness" found in importing the data in. This is not what h...

Re: Software for a Student

Doesn't even Modo have some plug in to do that? The plug in is called Power SubD and honestly there's nothing else quite like it in industry in terms of pre-defining edges on a SubD model so that when converted to NURBS you can pick said edges and continue and CAD operations required. Re: Software for a Student

The sub-D in F360 can convert to perfect nurbs surfaces which can be thickened etc though? If you use sub-D in Modo then you can't? I am mostly annoyed that DS didn't buy T-Splines when they had the chance and rather than buy Power Surfacing and implement it they bought out an entirely new CAD pack...

Re: Software for a Student

In the end it really just comes down to personal preference. NURBS vs SubD, 7th degree curvature continuity, making changes to adjust for client request. "Speed" is relative and workflow/project specific. There are times when making a certain model will need whatever tool is needed to get to the end...

Re: T-Splines replacement?

Physical dynamics can be simulated in Rhino using Grasshopper and kangaroo that are free plugins for Rhino. Yes this is a decent solution when it comes to dynamics but even Blender offers a wider deep range of solutions when it comes to this aspect. The thing here is that the industry will adopt the...

Re: 3D Patterns on Compound Surfaces/Solids

.why would you need it for both Mac and PC? Mostly convenience, I use both platforms roughly the same, I've thought about going full Mac, but there are still a few things I prefer and need doing on a PC, mostly non design things like web- app development & coding. Then just use Boot Camp on a Mac a...
