Re: ASU vs Virginia Tech?

I also graduated from ASU. I agree that the focus of the ID program (and the whole university for that matter) is on research. If you want to learn to be a rockstar sketch artist, go elsewhere. The alumni program is non existant, if that makes any difference. If you have the discipline to practice o...

Re: Would really love some advice for my crappy work situati

Waxy, I clicked on your little "www" link on your post to your portfolio and noticed that you were female. I once worked for a person who, I believe, thought women were incapable of doing anything worthwhile. If wasn't uncommon for female staff members to be yelled at (he yelled at everyone, now tha...

Re: ASU's ID Milestone Admissions

When I applied the first time for ASU's program, I was an alternate. So, I audited an entire years worth of classes in order to redo my portfolio for the next year. I also worked, really, really hard to improve. I went and talked to all the upper division professors and asked them for advise. I was ...

Re: Robust paint for handheld

I worked in the automotive refinishing industry for close to 8 years so I will try and help out on this one. What you want to use really depends on what kind of surface you want on the part, glossy, rubber-like, matte, etc. Most, if not all, car bumpers are a blend of ABS and something. These are pa...

Re: ASU, Arizona State University

I graduated from ASU and have already answered some questions from mysticbluex3 on what I thought of the experience. The advice I would offer any individual is, if possible, look into what you want to accomplish after graduation and see if the education you get at your selected school can get you th...

Re: How many new ID grads are having difficulty finding work?

Also, it is not uncommon for a great deal of anyone's graduating class to not be working in the field of ID. This isn't because of how crappy the economy is, it is just the way it is. Whatever man. I worked at Milwaukee Tool for a year. I watched 200+ people lose their jobs. I then did contract wor...

Re: How many new ID grads are having difficulty finding work?

Petulant whining? Wow. You're coming across as a bit strong; I'm not sure that's intentional or not. To be clear: I am earning a living doing ID, and NOT doing point of purchase. I think there is plenty of work around, especially this year, but there are still very, VERY few FULLTIME JUNIOR DESIGN ...

Another example: Jonny Ives. He's very practical and likes to innovate with materials. Here are two innovative examples. Would a stranger think these were designed by the same person? http://www.pocketmacblog.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/imac.jpg http://www.macblogz.com/Media/2008/8/imac.jpg...

Re: How many new ID grads are having difficulty finding work?

Wow. Let's keep things a little more civil, shall we? It is a fact that we are in the worst recession since WWII and as a result, the jobs just aren't there. It is not that people can't seem to land jobs, it's that the jobs just aren't there, along with many companies. Anyone who is lucky enough to ...

Re: CNC Milling Machine Recommendation

Matsuura, Mori Seiki are good, just like many others. It wouldn't hurt to look at used equipment right now either with how many shops are going under. Unless you are doing aerospace tolerances, a little wear on a 10 year old machine will be hardly noticeable. Plus, you can probably get one for a qua...

For those who are curious about the Wahl Peanut, it is a very tiny edge trimmer for hair stylists. It is called the Peanut because it is so small. They probably put the peanut-like texture on it to stick with a theme and so you could hold on to the little bugger. And those of you who buy clippers at...

I've had some discussions about the social ramafications of being "De-friended". It basically means someone has to resent you so much (usually an ex-girlfriend) that they actually take the time to remove you, rather then just leaving you sit with their thousands of other "aquantinces". I've had it ...

If I am not mistaken, the tablet he (and I) has works just fine and is a 14 incher, and comes with a warranty because they can be purchased new. It's sold by gateway, but not made by them. Check them out. Mine is fast enough to game with.
