Re: CES 2016

CES was a blast! Soooo many drones, VR headsets and bluetooth speakers. Biggest CES show to-date. In case you're interested, TEAMS posted a designers'-eye view on the show here: http://goo.gl/SZ2iTh Congrats Mike on a great booth and awesome products!! I couldn't make it to the Thursday party, but I...

CES 2016

Would love to meet up with fellow designers at CES. Any ideas for a meetup for the evening of Jan 6th?

Re: CAD File transfers

In some cases a file without the parametricy makes sense, but in my experience its much easier to give them the native file and try and keep tabs. If they are going to make the changes, they will. They key is to know what software they really need. On one occasion we were told that the vendor needed...

Re: Apple's iPad and the Human Toll for Workers in China

This weekend I heard the TAL broadcast where they put all the facts straight, and lay into Daisey. Compelling stuff. They were fishing for why he did it. Why he lied. It seems he focused on writing a creative, entertaining script instead of a fair report of facts. The crime of the matter (and a seri...

Re: Medium sized international design firms?

... maybe we should start defining medium sized as frog and alike have ca. 1500 employees vs for example ziba with ca. 100 (?). The size question often comes up. I'm often curious how many actual Industrial Designers each of the larger firms have. Firms like Frog and IDEO have hundreds of employees...

Re: Functional Portfolio

It's a good idea. But don't get caught up in making the new format a new archetype for everyone, focus on creating the absolute best possible solution for what YOU want to convey about your skills. A prospective employer's job is to 'read between the lines' of a portfolio to try to understand about ...

Re: Lack of Direction from Clients

The good news is that they are happy with what you're providing and it's being used. But it sounds like they don't fully understand what you're providing them and are therefor not able to evaluate what you are providing them. For that matter they are probably not able to 'protect' it as it goes furt...

Re: Job-Specific Portfolio

Thanks for the update. I originally agreed with the feedback Yo and bcpid gave you about having a well-rounded portfolio. Showing a designer your attempts at a product they have had many years of experience with may actually highlight your naivete to the category. For instance, I could use my experi...

Re: Medium sized international design firms?

I was recently looking at Frog Design and Ideo's websites, and noticed how ridiculously large they have become. I get mixed emotions from that, because I think that big firms inherently become inefficient, and lose their personality. I know what you mean. I hate to see when companies hit that 'bloa...

Re: Looking for Chicago Based Speakers

I just saw your post. I think you were here recently with Stephen Melamed, but feel free to contact anyone here at TEAMS about coming by again. Now that we have such a large classroom area dedicated for workshops and lectures we want to take advantage of it as much as possible. http://www.teamsdesig...

Re: Next Desktop.

I think it's a glimpse at the future. Look around you, there are screens popping up everywhere. The future laptop won't need a screen, it'll just access screens around you (wirelessly). Saves cost, weight and negates the screen-size debate. Much cooler too. Public places (like public transport, Star...

Re: Social value of Design?

- How we can measure the "value of design" in these days compared to the quality of life in first world/developed nations vs third world/developing nations? .... You're onto something here. We designers would like to feel we're the 'good guys' in all of this, but we're not. Well...it's relative. We...

IDSA-MW Awesomeness

Last weekend John Caruso and his team put together the biggest ever regional IDSA conference. Not only hot at the box office but also great content. Somehow he got the magic formula just right. OK, OK the last session draaaaaaaged on a bit, and the evening bar crawls were more like treasure hunts wi...

Re: Chicago?

Sorry to see no-one responded sooner! Chicago is quite a good hub of design activity.

The IDSA chapter tends to put on quite a few successful events and they do a good job of publicizing non-IDSA events by email too. Follow links on their site to sign up for their emails: http://idsachicago.org

Re: C77 Board Traffic

I've been thinking about this, but never did "debate" in the past. Can anyone explain that " fight club " thing they did in the past? or how real debates are organized? ...right now, some discussions are polarizing and spark good debate. ...Maybe a topic and two opposing views could be presented by...
