Re: Memorable moments as designers

My list somewhat mirrors Yo's list - but slightly different: - The first time I saw one of my designs in the Sky Mall magazine - I threw-up a little in my mouth. WTF!!!!???? - The first time I toured a Chinese factory - and thinking how much longer will I need to be doing this? That was 27 years ago...

Re: How are you doing financially as a designer

I was good... until my ball-busting shrew of an ex-wife drilled deep into my salary and relieved me of the bulk of my take-home pay and left me deep in legal debt. Oh wait, what was the question? So kids, here are the lessons - don't do drugs, stay in school, and never get married. And yes, it's OK ...

Re: Who's Flying in Business Class?

Travel hint to Asia: Row 31 in coach on Delta's 777 - there's an extra 8" of legroom in the bulkhead row. I just flew 4 legs in row 31 and it's like a poor man's business class with crappy food.

Re: IDSA Awards vs Core77

I realize it may be economically unfeasible, but it would be interesting to have a design competition without a $100+ entry fee. That hurdle may be keeping some small independent designers from entering their designs. Of course larger corporations don't blink at the fees because it comes out of the ...

Re: Laser marking on small production runs.

We have parts laser-etched in China. I saw it being done last month and was amazed at how simple it was. It's a cottage industry there. A couple ladies had 3 lasers going in a small storefront shop. They were doing bike handlebars. No eye protection and just hand holding the parts on a jig. All I co...

Re: Tibet Travel Tips?

From my photo-blog posts: BTW: Please don't leave any comments on the web site about the photos of the Chinese military presence in Tibet. It may sound paranoid, but I need to stay "clean" in case big brother in China is sniffing my web site. I want to keep my China visa intact for work. Thanks Dai...

Re: US real estate

I just sold my Minneapolis house last week (divorce motivated sale). Sold for $30,000 less than I paid 8 years ago and will walk away from the closing with a cool $1,000 in my pocket - after putting down $80,000 when I bought. It's the first time I've EVER lost money on a house sale. I'm taking my $...

Just shopped @ Muji yesterday at the Hong Kong airport. I'm a regular at Muji - food / candy / office supplies / clothes. Sadly the clothes are sized for Japanese bodies and the sleeves are short on my frame.
