Re: Skeuomorphic Design

Isn't Skeuomorphic just another way of saying that the Semantics of the design have been taken into account, another way of emotionally connecting the user to the product? There's a quote about it somewhere. Could have been a Don Norman one. When you look at you go "yeah, thats exactly how it Shoul...

Re: Google, Google TV and the internets

Already, I hate TV because of the moronic adverts and even worse programs. Now Google wants to integrate their flawed search engine onto my TV. Why? If we really want to take these crusty old mediums, like TV, and inspire people, we need to get away from the model of advertising at all cost. I don'...

Re: Is there such thing as General Design Skill?

Yes, there is such a thing as General Design Skill. It's the process of problem solving and the craft of production. I think those who struggle to work in other media tend to be too narrowly focused on execution of a specific aesthetic or craft. I like to pick those people out on Project Runway beca...

Re: Daft Punk and Tron. YES!

It was a beautiful movie to look at and a trip to experience. But I've been watching clips from the original and it's pretty obvious that they weren't taking nearly the same kind of risks. It's like they were trying too hard to be taken seriously. Where are the mindbenders? The "what the hell did I ...

Re: Skeuomorphic Design

QWERTY keyboard--the key placement was originally designed to slow people down so the typewriter won't jam. A lot of the keys too used to relate to typewriter mechanics: TABs were actual tabs you set on the carriage. SHIFT is something the printhead would do, RETURN would return the printhead to the...

Re: Designers starting businesses

My skillset and talent is design, so I want to spend as much time as I can designing things. So for me, #1 & #2 make the most sense. Why does #3 appeal to so many designers? The above quote from Coffee87 is about having total control of your vision... but why is that so important? Why not just be an...

Re: When/where do you wished you lived?

I think it would be amazing to have lived in the 1890's. Perhaps even more amazing than living now. But in many ways I feel fortunate to have been born in the early 1970's since I've literally grown up with the personal computing revolution. For me it's a perfect intersection of time, location, tech...

Re: Creating a Font

Years ago I used a free Microsoft app that did this--it was made when they came out with WinXP Tablet Edition.
You would simply draw each letter in a box on the tablet, and it would generate the font. Easiest way to go by far.

On my Macbook, I can simply use a multi-touch twist on the trackpad to do this in PS--very fast and natural.

Re: Good examples of design for the elderly?

Look at the Arthritis Foundation Ease-of-Use Commendation program. The Arthritis Foundation created a program to encourage manufacturers to design user-friendly products and packaging. Manufacturers submit their product(s) for testing by an independent lab experienced in the design and evaluation of...

Re: Let's Talk Kickstarter

Ok, so I'm the guy that said "this changes everything." And it does. Really. It continues to blow my mind, and could never have been done like this before. And meritocracies are the future--I'm a believer! Or is this a case of Scott finding the perfect intersection of product and business model? - C...

I have seen a lot of things in my 20 years of designing products for small and huge companies alike but this is definitely a new phenomena. I am blown away by this experience and your unbelievable response. We are in awe of the support and the power of Kickstarter and the community. Beyond the prod...

Re: Scott Wilson's Apple Watch

The funding aspect of this has rocked my world. I pledged when he was only at $4,000, wondering if he'd make the $15,000 goal with less than a month to go. The pledges hovered there for hours, until Josh at Cool Hunting picked it up, and Gizmodo from there. Then it spiked to $14,000 within minutes, ...

Re: Project Modai: The future of mobile devices [11-8 UPDATE

I'm digging the retro-aesthetic of the UI. Very different than what we see today in mobile. But if I was doing the ID around that, it would look really different than the sharp-edge futuristic stuff you've been showing us. Who is this Hunter guy anyway? What would we expect to see pulled out of his ...
