Re: buying a range - soliciting advice

Induction or gas…. don’t let my father hear you, he will go on about the superior-ness of induction above all-else. He will follow that conversation with an equally precise one about the 24 layer, 13 different metal, pans he uses that make sure the heat distribution (and associated expansion of meta...

Re: greatest Design D'Oh Moments

Heard this story on NPR/BBC this morning. According to the reporter, the architect, Rafael Viñoly, used a similar design in Las Vegas with similar issues. http://www.cnn.com/2013/09/03/world/europe/uk-london-building-melts-car/ Also the architect's modeling showed that this would happen for a few ho...

Yeah, agreed, like that Audi ad.
The voice over hits me a bit Dr. Suess-ish - in a good way.

Re: Boston Area Wood Coops

Hi Traftos, Take a look at Artisan's Asylum - in Somerville. http://artisansasylum.com/ Largest Hacker Space on the East coast, maybe the US. My understanding is that all the spaces are rented but could be wrong. There are a handful of woodworkers there. All sorts of wood/metal/other equipment, folk...

Re: Vietnam + Cambodia

You should be able to exchange money at the airport but that will be the worst exchange rate. ATMs are becoming universal. I know I used them in Vn. Think I used them in Cam? You might be able to get cash advances/exchanges at banks on your CC, though of course you will be hit with fees. Side note: ...

Re: Vietnam + Cambodia

There are certain vaccines you need to get before going (coming from the states). I had a card with me that the doctor gave me with what I got in case I needed to show customs. I forget where I found out I needed. Guide book, doctor and/or countries (tourist) website. If memory serves, I got Yellow ...

Re: Vietnam + Cambodia

Adding quickly and randomly to Travisimo's comments... I traveled with friends for a month from Cam to Vn, Ankor to HCMC then northward to Hanoi/Ha Long bay. The boarder is no big deal. Friends and I passed through when SARs was just starting and so we, the only westerners, were singled out to fill ...

Re: Community workshop

Spaces like what you are talking about exist in many forms. From the tiny amount of searching I have done, I would say that smaller, electronic/arts & crafts spaces are more common. Larger spaces with CNC lathes, table saws, laser engravers, mig/tig equipment do exist as well but I hear of them less...

Most of what I'm going to list I haven't been to, but have seen listings of here and there, or have been to ages ago. Also this list will be random as I'm just thinking along what might be considered creative in any realm. So... -There used to be, pretty sure still are, architectural tours in/around...

Re: A few thoughts while on a Amtrak

My two cents primarily from Amtrak Boston to NYC.... -A little let down by the quality. Armrest broken in places around the controls. Some doors semi operational. -WIFI was slooooowwww. The trains didn't appear that full and I don't think the sites I was visiting were bandwidth hogs. Thought the WIF...

Re: Making Drinks

The Fancy Drinks poster reminds me of a mix drink poster that my father had. The drinks in their appropriate glasses were shown in an isometric, blue ozalid, technical drawing form. I remember it being informative yet graphically simple. I had it but think I lost it in a move. Thought my father and ...

Re: Winter Bike Commuting

I've been biking to work (and wherever else I can bike to) year round, 8 miles each way, for 12 years (in Boston) and here's what's worked for me. In the winter I general ride my mt bike with my standard knobby tires, but when it gets icy I switch to studded (Hakkapeliitta W240). Fenders are key - r...

Got to back up NURB with the shout-out to IF. You can't got wrong with them. Custom built and painted. Depending on how labor intensive the paint design is it's covered in the price. Or you can go way custom like I did and pay some more. http://www.ifrider.com/rising-sun-titanium-crown-jewel/ They b...
