I started with a fairly clear idea of what this would look like.

5mins sketching

45mins illustrator

10mins presentation

the one-hour throwdown is over!

So my concept is about bringing the form of an ancient scroll into the modern day, using e-paper. As the presentation says, you can upload content from home, or buy and upload it instore.

Given more time, I would have liked to explore the instore docking station / purchase point. I was envisaging the instore interface being similar to iTunes and the dock to be like a shallow sink.

Many of the ebook concepts featured a flap cover like a real book. Part of the reason cited, besides protection of the screen, was to simulate the experience of reading a book. It reminded me of the Gutenberg Bibles. The first books to be mass printed using movable type were deliberately designed to look like the handwork of a manuscript copyist for greater public acceptance.

I decided I didn't want to translate the concept of a book into the ebook. My design is more of a content "viewer" than the e-version of a real book.

---

A few thoughts I had in mind while I was designing this:

1. It has to look cool. I want to want to be seen carrying it around in the open on campus.

2. Bare minimal functions to keep the interface simple.

3. It can be held and used with either hand.

This is a basic, no frills ebook featuring only an on/off button and scroll wheels for page scrolling. Shaped handles and scrollwheels are placed on both sides of the ebook so that you can use it with either hand at any one time.

I wasn't going to but decided why not?
Nothing too complicated, pretty simple actually.
-Standard touch interface, also pen if wanted.
-User changeable covers that can be made of various materials, soft, hard, monogram, whatever, that can just snap on to cover the screen
-Simple aluminum extruded or look-a-like bottom plate, generously curved corners for comfort
-USB and memory card inputs/outputs for syncing with computer.
-Downloads books wirelessly.
-Allows downloading pdf's, text files, saved web pages, podcasts, music, etc..from home computer. Some like to listen to music while reading.
-All inputs and manual controls are covered to prevent accidental activity except for the headphone jack and the spring-loaded pen input device.

I started working on an illustrator rendering but it wasn't ready by the time limit so I scrapped it. I could've just did it straight in ai but I've had a bit too much of that this weekend, wanted to take a break and touch some paper.

Designed for applications where users must access and review massive numbers of pages. Controlled by a central server similar to corporate blackberry service.

I decided to keep it really simple - back to basics. If people want a book, why not give them a book, except with digital pages. No fancy connections - insert your book before you read it. Get your books by either simply purchasing them in a shop as everything else, or reload your memory card at a public library, your own PC, or dedicated book-o-mats at colleges, airports, 7-eleven, etc.

edit: forgot to mention, I didn't want it to look cool or new or dorky - I wanted it to look like any other book. If you were seen reading this book no one would pay more attention to you than if it was The Da Vinci Code. An idea I had was that you would get interchangable paper covers as on regular books when you purchased one, in case you want to show of what it is you are reading.

This Penguin eBook is very simple like Penguin Book.
Two Touch Sensor is the same (Function, Position, Size...) for Left Hand and Right Hand.
Power is just push and down.
And One Hand Grip is also comfort.

it looks like a moleskiner.
people like to use it during travel, it`s easy for portable.
i think it`s good to be a e-reader, too. :D

the screen can change to the wild view, and become more easy to read.

About the universal design concept, the easily portable and easily to watch the context of this e-book, the design concept is from the original form-that is small and easily portable by 1/4 part of the body. And then, folded to 1/2 part for the body and this is normally watching situation. Finally, if you can not watch the context clearly, you can fold this soft e-paper to 1/1 part and you will see the most bigger words and context.

Easily portably and easily using.

My idea was not to change the way people interact with books, but to provide a better book to interact with.

Image

The eBook is a digital library with simple touch screen controls. A cover protects the screen and opens like a book to reveal the touchscreen unit. Features include, larger print for those with weaker vision, stylus for taking notes in the page margins (pages can be read with or with out notes showing), dog ear to bookmark pages of importance, and easy page navigation. Not shown is the charger/docking station, which the unit slides into loke a book into a bookshelf.

I'm constantly marking up my books...writing in the columns, leaving bookmarks by nice passages...so I really would like the same features in an e-book. I started with those main desires, and let ideas start flowing.

It's also important to me to keep the design as environmentally friendly as possible. To have a bamboo, or other sustainable wood casing would be fantastic, and the entire package would have to be easily disassembled at end of lie and as recyclable as possible. Solar panels on the back seem like a no brianer, my ideal e-book would only tie into the grid to download more reading material!

So I tried to come up with an ebook in about an hour. Difficult mission.

The result is pretty much what everyone expect it would be, I have to admit it. I concentrated more on its features than on the aesthetics aspects.

What is clear to me is that the multi-touch interface is a must, and I began with the page turning feature, making it very cognitive with no adaptation needed in the transition from regular paper books.

Since this gadget is the evolution of ipod, but with books, I made it as an etertainment product and not just an ebook. Its screen makes it perfect for watching movies and music videos, so it would be a waste if it didn't have this feature on it. The music comes along, obviously. Other features such as an agenda and/or any kind of organizer could be incorporated, but let's not forget that is all about this entertainment center with a great screen and not a tablet pc or an iphone.

In the left menu I putted 4 important quick-menu touch buttons:
- menu
- info
- chapters
- notes
- *

Let me describe them very quickly ...

MENU: goest to the main menu.

INFO: gives info about the current activity (time reading, pages read/pages left, notes taken, etc.). This is a great add-on I think. It gives you the status and your performance very quickly. I wish I had this one already!

CHAPTERS: want to find something quick? go back to some important part?

NOTES: how to read and not take notes or underline some of the text? For me it is impossible and one of the biggest challenges of eBooks.

*: unblock menu. since it is positioned where the hands will be holding the book, and since the HOLD BUTTON is only when the product is not in use I created this feature, positioned in the bottom (a place where it is difficult to use for holding the book), to allow the other menu features to be used.

Since it is a very "big" product, it would not be very difficult to have a very good flash memory in it so it could store a lot of media. The connectivity is a must as well and the size was thinked to be a "universal standard" one.

Hope you all like it!

Greetings from Brazil!

Ebinde is a flexible ebook that come with different variations of rubber grid. Depends on which rubber grid that the user chooses to use, ebinde can go in different kind of binder allowing user to carry and store both digital and hard copy documents at the same place. It is Ideal for meeting or presentation. User can also be able to hold and carry ebinde with their own hands by switching to “Handle” rubber grid (available in both vertical and Horizontal). That way user does not even need a bag to carry.
