Is Industrial Design Very Technical / Engineering Related?

Industrial design by its definition means bringing products towards manufacturability, and technical/mechanical expertise is a core asset. But if you want to specialize in a few areas there are plenty of things you can do. Start by thinking more in terms of product design - graphic + 3D, then you can do softgoods, interiors, POP’s, and if you are willing to learn basic knowledge about a few manufacturing processes, software and prototyping processes a new world will open and you can keep building more and more complex products/systems.

If you are intimidated by mech. eng., the book ‘invention and evolution’ by M.J. French is a good start and makes it fun to learn about fundamental concepts.
