Just got down to LA from San Fran, anything happening in the SOCAL area soon?

A few upcoming events.

Seaweed & Gravel is throwing a “White Flag” party. Inspired by the days when the rat pack would hang out in San Diego county for the horse races. They would put up a white flag outside of a hotel room and throw bashes:

necropost…

I’m back in SD permanently and on the lookout for ID events. It appears that the linkedin group hasn’t had anything going on since September. Did all of the Industrial Design folks move away? …or is everyone just really busy?

One was just planned today:

IDSD Happy Hour at BJ’s Brewhouse (Wednesday Jan 28th @ 5:30pm)

Chris Ross
Product Design Expert :heavy_check_mark: Design Strategy :heavy_check_mark: Medical Device Design :heavy_check_mark: Industrial Design :heavy_check_mark: Biomedical Technology
I hope everyone’s new year is off to a great start! We will continue our IDSD meet-ups (happy hours and speaking engagements) on the last Wednesday of every month. Next week we’re meeting at BJ’s Brewhouse:

January 28th (5:30pm-7:30, 8ish) - IDSD Happy Hour
BJ’s Brewhouse
5613 Paseo Del Norte
Carlsbad, CA

For those of you who have not been to one yet, it’s simply a very casual get together of like-minded (not always though, HA!) San Diego/OC Industrial Designers. The goal is to bring the local design community together and strengthen relationships that will benefit each of us personally and professionally. There are now 148 people in this group and most of them are in San Diego/OC. If you haven’t been to an IDSD meetup, make it one of your 2015 resolutions.

Who’s in this month?

Best - Chris

I went to an opening at Ship In The Woods last month and it was crazy awesome cool. Basically it is a sprawling mid century modern home in the woods that has been converted into an art/music space with a giant ship anchor coming out of the chimney. If you are allergic to hipsters, beware, otherwise it is pretty fun. Lots of art installations and live music/DJs.

SAID Presents "Lazy Left
An Exhibition by Dustyn Peterman aka “Dusty Dirtweed”
Opening Reception / Friday April 3rd, 2015 @saidspace

As if uncovered in the stockroom of a surplus warehouse, Lazy Left hangs as a museum of military inspired relics and homegrown Americana. Clipped from the neglected pages of dust stained combat training manuals, these works glance into a seemingly unquestioned brutality posed by a dead-stock militia culture. Rebel Rock n’ Roll in a leather knuckle bunker. For over a decade Dustyn Peterman has brought his forefront talent and relentless passion for visual design to countless mainstay musicians and creative outlets alike. A step outside the realm of his staple poster design language, this exhibition serves as a creative playpen to aid in the forming new connections and conversations in and around the work.

Opening Reception Friday, April 3rd from 7PM - 10PM
Show: Lazy Left - April-3, 2015

IDSD Speaker Series: Allen Young - The Secrets Of Crowdfunding Your Own Product To Market (January 27th 5:30-7:30)
Most industrial designers dream of designing their own product and releasing it to the world. One of our very own IDSD members, Allen Young, has done that…twice just last year. His two bicycle accessories VIER and BEHOLD quickly reached their funding goals on KickStarter.

Allen has offered to speak with the group about his two Kickstarter successes. Come learn about the ins and outs of developing your own product and running a successful crowdfunding campaign.

Please email RSVP to chris at mindflowdesign.com by Monday January 25th, the number of people coming with you so we can plan accordingly. We’ll host appetizers and drinks and follow the usual format; first hour of networking and the second hour the speaker will present.

The goal of the IDSD San Diego based 2016 Speaker Series and meetups is to learn from each other so we can better educate our clients, employers, and the business community about design. IDSD events will typically be on the last Wednesday of the month as they have in the past. 2016 will be a combination of Speaker Series and meet ups.

This event is January 27th, 5:30-7:30 pm
MindFlow Design studio
5451 Avenida Encinas, Suite H
Carlsbad, CA 92008

IDSD is hosting another event on the 24th, down at the Domus Academy’s San Diego extension.

IDSD Meetup at the New School of Architecture and Design - (February 24th 5:30pm-6:30pm)
Next week’s meetup will be at the Domus Academy New School of Architecture and Design downtown at 5:30pm. Elena Pacenti, the director, has graciously offered to host the pre-lecture IDSD event at the school.

Immediately following, we’ll walk across the street at 6:30 to attend NewSchool’s Lecture Series Event with the new President Marvin J. Malecha. Marvin will discuss the creative process of design thinking through the lens of his exceptional career as an educator, administrator and architect. This should be a great talk!

These two events are not (really) connected and both require you to register (for free) separately.

If you’d like to attend the IDSD pre-lecture event, please email me by Monday (22nd) evening. (Info in link)

If you plan on attending the Lecture Series (6:30-8:30) and want to learn more about it, click this link: > Lecture Series: President Marvin J. Malecha Tickets, Wed, Feb 24, 2016 at 6:30 PM | Eventbrite

May 11/12 IDSA Women+Design Summit

DESCRIPTION
A one-day summit to focus on the unique challenges and accomplishments of women in design. Through speakers, panels, and workshops we will delve into personal stories, experiences and ever evolving topics of women working in design.
We want to celebrate women who are making a difference, such as our all-female slate of officers rejuvenating one of IDSA’s largest communities—the San Francisco Chapter, the years of dedication of the Women in Design Special Interest Section, women in the Academy of Fellows, and the growing number of women studying and practicing design all around the world.
Speakers include designer/entrepreneur Ti Chang of Crave, Maaike Evers of Mike and Maaike, Erica Eden, director of global innovation at Pepsico; Andrea Small, director of product and portfolio strategy at Herman Miller, Rebecca Alvord, of GE Appliances, and Diane Allen of Nissan Design America.

Thursday
May 11, 2017
5:00p – 6:00p Welcome Wine & Cheese
Sponsored by PepsiCo. | Renaissance San Diego Rooftop Lounge, 421 West B Street, San Diego CA 92101

Friday
May 12, 2017
8:00a – 8:45a Morning Coffee
8:45a – 9:00a Welcome Remarks
Megan Neese, IDSA, Chair, IDSA Board of Directors
9:00a – 9:30a Keynote Speaker
Maaike Evers, Mike & Maaike
9:30a – 10:00a Speaker
Ti Chang, CRAVE | The Story of Crave
A woman starting a sex toy company is rare. Even if you take out the “sex toy” part, this is still true. Ti Chang, IDSA, will share how she designed and hustled to build her company Crave. This is behind-the-scene stuff; rarely shared.
10:00a – 11:00a Workshop
Moderated by Disrupt Design | Gender Equity
11:30a – 12:00p Speaker
Andrea Small, Herman Miller | Untold Stories of Women in Design
When people think about the legends of design at Herman Miller, they think of Nelson, Noguchi, Rohde, Girard, Stumpf, Chadwick. Even when people think of the Ray and Charles Eames, Ray sometimes gets sidelined. In her talk, Small will share untold stories of the women behind some of the most iconic designs of our time.
12:15p – 1:30p Lunch and “Table Talks”
1:30p – 2:00p Speaker
Erica Eden, director of global design innovation at PespsiCo
Women Are Not Robots: A Case for a Human Approach to Innovation
Erica will share a design audit of the consumer packaged goods category which reveals what works (and what doesn’t) for women—from brand and packaging to food design and nutrition, and more. Essentially, we treat women like robots—one-dimensional stereotypes that respond to quantitative and highly rational needs—a series of 0s and 1s. We’ve forgotten that women, unlike robots, make emotional decisions with their hearts and eyes, with rational benefits working hard in the background. Despite demand, human and holistic solutions for women are in short supply. Design can help! Looking outward, we see a series of oversights and opportunities.
2:00p – 3:00p Panel
Moderated by Nancy Perkins, FIDSA, Perkins Design Ltd.
Gender Equity By Design
A seasoned group of female designers will tackle questions about work-life balance and the challenges they have faced throughout their careers that have impacted their successes in life and the design business. Join Nancy Perkins, FIDSA, as she speaks with Pattie Moore, FIDSA, Betty Baugh, FIDSA, and Katherine Bennett of Art Center College of Design .
3:00p – 3:30p Coffee Break
3:30p – 4:30p Workshop
Facilitated by Rebecca Alvord, IDSA, GE Appliances | Inspiring Leadership
How often in our busy lives, do we take time for personal and small group reflection on how to be a better leader? In accountability groups that will live on after the conference, we’ll discuss challenges that today’s women leaders face as well as anecdotal examples of inspiring leadership. We can all recognize great leadership, but how do we get there? Individually, each participant will focus on a personal challenge that they need to improve and then work through a plan of action with a partner. Prepare to be challenged and to help encourage others to be better leaders.
4:30p – 5:00p Closing Speaker
Diane Allen, Nissan Design | Driving Design: Women in Automotive Design
Diane will talk about women designers in the automotive industry. She is a Senior Manager of Design at Nissan North America where she has worked as an automotive designer since 1984. She has managed a wide range of programs from exploatory to production design including the notable 350Z and 370Z sports cars as well as full-size trucks including all-new Nissan Titan.
5:00p – 5:15p Closing Remarks
Megan Neese, IDSA, Chair, IDSA Board of Directors
