I believe cardboard mock ups are merely exploratory. They do not hold any weight as a model. Whenever I created models, be it in school, work or for myself, I used hard foam sculpting and went thru the process of fiberglass reinforcement, sanding etc. Sometimes an actual working prototype was created.
