2014 Corvette

Here are some in-person shots to counter the renders: 2014 Corvette Stingray: Pure Car Porn

It would also appear that, from the driver’s seat at least, the ‘pinch’ detail on the passenger side trim is almost irrelevant thanks to the sweeping form of the controls designed to face the pilot.

Also, might have to start a new thread about this, but… anyone else see the Cadillac ELR about to enter production!?
“This is what happens when a Volt and an ATS get dirty”

digging it.

The creases on the hood kinda look like they came from marker streaks on a rendering. I like.

with little color change in the interior trim…

here is the pinch-that’s-not-a-pinch from the passenger perspective.

That passenger side view makes me not hate the pinch either. As long as you’re not sitting in the trunk with a fisheye lens it looks pretty good. Nice placement of the oh-sh*t handle as well.

I feel that the CoreBoards have reached a new level of sophistication when we complain about this weird little detail for 2 pages!

Haha, ok I formally rescind my complaint about the pinch, it really irked me the fish eye shot but in real life it’s definitely not as awkward.

Corvette 2014 , it looks very nicely sculpted/clean design. I think they have refined the logo a bit… it is a little more dynamic … like a bird or fighter plane. (the same hint in the design.) They should have been careful as it shares some similarities with others. (Mainly headlight graphics/design)

Cadillac ELR, looks great. I am not pleased with BIG grill & ultra-dynamic wheels. Any simple wheel design can go with that dynamic stance.

And they share a similar wheel arch side indicator …

The gigantic fake grill on that ELR belongs on the skeuomorphism thread. The only real cooling inlet on the front of that car is the little slit below where the front license plate goes. Surely we can come up with something better to differentiate the front of a vehicle than an ersatz external radiator, something that stopped being used on cars in the 1930s. You might as well put a fiberglass horse in front of the thing.

In that case, they just lost the opportunity of making sleek looking & advanced vehicle…

That is a huge pet peeve of mine, and has been a growing trend for the last two decades. How many of the dozens of grills and vents on this new Vette are non-functional? Do they actually cool the taillights?

Easy on that one - all of those grilles are functional.

The vents on the top of the rear fenders and back bumper are for cooling the transaxle (the Corvette has the transmission located in the back unlike most vehicles) and for the rear brakes.

Unlike most of the vents on a Mustang which are mostly pieces of plastic held on by double stick tape to look cool.

Nice proportions, but a little too much surfacing for my tastes. Appears to contain an abundance of today’s design trends (cliches), that places a definite time stamp on its creation.
A bit like the Nickleback of car designs; mediocre and boring to some, greatest evar to many others. I’m sure it will sell well…

Though the rear could use moar cowbell.

From the CFD images in that gallery, it looked more like they were routing the rear fender vent through to the taillight vent, presumably to cut a little drag (dumping some high pressure air into the low pressure wake). If they are actually going to the brakes and the transaxle, then they are more “functional” than functional. Rear brakes don’t need cooling on a road car. In the unlikely event the transaxle needed cooling, you’d use an oil cooler, since blowing air over the case isn’t going to do much. Regardless of whether these vents actually direct air anywhere, they are for looks more than anything else.

It might be for aeroas well, but from what I’ve read their is a dedicated heat exchanger for the oil cooler for the transaxle in the back and one of those vents is dumping air through that radiator.

Point being, they’re doing something even if that something may be not that important. Ex. The Corvette has had rear brake cooling since the C5 Z06, so it may not be needed on a road car, but there are plenty of Corvettes that do see the track, even if it’s not the majority. They’re not stick on gills like people throw on the rear quarter window of their Mustang to “cool the glass” if you know what I mean.

Even on a race car, rear brake cooling is pretty unnecessary. But yeah, agreed, at least they do something. There are few things that annoy me more than fake vents.

ANYTHING is better than the old vette. That super ugly blocky rear end is so lame!
The designer of that should be flogged!!

I’m liking the direction of the new Stingray.

Thought this was interesting…not the fact that the car auctioned for more than a Veyron, but that all of the money will be donated to CCS. Does that mean all the CCS students now get to buy Corvettes? Nice little gesture for the design community.

In the light of the “fake vents” discussion" I got to ask you how this could have gone down unnoticed:

It is very obviously pretty horrible at pretending to be an air intake, isn’t it?

Alfa did a scudetto like this on the 145 and it was so awful that owners did all kinds of things to it, to “improve”:
