You were just given some fantastic advice from a successful professional shoe designer. My suggestion would be to take his advice if you are remotely interested in becoming footwear designer. Design is only about 10% (if that!) pretty pictures and hot renderings. The more you learn about what goes into shoes, the better your designs will get.
