I gave it a quick shot just 5 minutes, i think it might be something to further develop, what do you guys think

Maybe if you would work the window/metro tiles to resemble a squarish #8… now - no. Symbol needs to work without the type, it will be on icons, buttons etc… Looks like a TV channel now…

it was just a quick thought, not really thought through, I was hoping more people could throw in their version and in the end we come up with something cool.
If you have time throw one in

Anyone else wanna give it a try???

It’s not even the right Logo: “Meanwhile, the logo’s designer, Paula Scher at Pentagram, could only sigh. The dimensions were off, and it wasn’t even in the right color. Her work for one of the world’s largest brands was already being skewered, but it wasn’t even the right work.”

FastCo account of thought process, and about Pentagram’s servers being “hacked”. “Someone took a picture of a logo or made a stamping,” Scher tells us. “Some Chinese website leaked it. They put up the wrong form, wrong type size, etc.”

yeah, just read that as well, The New Windows 8 Logo Arrives, Trailed By Pirates And Haters. Kinda of funny that it got a good review by some very professional designers on this forum!!!
So come on guys lets see what you got and redesign it. I gave it a quick try, hope someone can follow up

Microsoft is like GM: They will never get credit for doing a good job.

That is the logo, everyone…

I still think it’s incomplete somehow and it could have been done better but maybe the better concept went in the drawer!

@those who don’t see the resemblance with the Apple logo: It actually went from multicolor to monocolor if you remember.

Another awesome thing I found today:

Also, I was thinking at what if the logo could actually keep the colors W7 logo had, and have a black text?..

And I think that a Windows 8 redesign challenge would turn out damn interesting.

EDIT: Something like this:

Somewhere, lurking in the negative space of that “window” is the numeral “8”; I don’t know if it’s a matter of rotating it 90° and/or dropping two of the squares, or changing their color, or shade values, adding large radii to them, but it’s there.

Then again, who gives a flying rat’s … they upgrade, update, change their software so frequently they should simply adopt the “Forever” system implemented by the U.S. Postal System… or simply use: Windows 10.24.2012 (or any other date of release) as the name.

What’s Windows 13 going to look like?

I wonder what the guys at FROG would have designed???

Definitely an improvement in moving away from gradients and four colors, especially since Google executes that paradigm much better.

Font’s kinda boring. It’s not the same as the metro font, is it? The modified Frutiger? Maybe it’s just the boring weight/execution…

The color isn’t working for me, but I guess in context it may be applied in cool ways.

I love the move away from the flag window. Could be more dynamic like the 1.0, but it communicates it pretty well.

Not bad MS, between windows phone, the lumia 800/900 and this I’m starting to be convinced that amazingly talented designers have authority in the company…I’m still skeptical about the Office/Outlook divisions though, gmail is still better than outlook.

Liked the 13th one. That thing really beats the one MS did:

That is nicer. I would use more metro flavor colors, though. Google now owns the board game color scheme (red blue green yellow).

I’m going to have to call ‘bullocks’ on this new Windows logo - it defines the very essence of generic and bland!

So, what are their logo claims:

1 - a ‘window-like’ icon
2 - the name ‘Windows 8’
3 - now in a ‘fresh’ Tron-blue color

Please.

They’ve lost the essence of their logo completely. There is something familiar (and yes, ‘old’) about their wavy window logo that I think should really be brought forward to the new ‘feeling’ of their Windows 8 logo. As it is, this implied 4-pane literal window looks old, tired and generic. There’s nothing personally that gets me excited about this logo, or makes me passionate about it.

I would also argue that at some point, you have to look at the window pane without the ‘windows 8’ mark and see how it stands by itself. After all, they need to think about all of the ways the mark can and will be used, and at some point, if they’ve built a good enough mark, that would be an aspiration of the window pane - see Apple, Nike, Starbucks, etc. As it sits now, it’s a slightly perspective series of blocks. Not very inspiring.

I see a very reactionary, safe and tired logo with nothing ventured and with absolutely no aspirational ‘oomph’ to have it last long.

Paging the Arnell Group…I think this one may represent another ‘Tropicana’-sized event…

I agree totally, it doesn’t attract in any way

I think the logo looks incomplete, it is a nice evolution but it doesn’t feel like a great execution. I have to also chuckle a bit at industrial designers trying to be graphic designers. I can generally tell when a graphic designer tries to design a product, and similarly in general IDers have an equally challenging time with graphics and logos. I in no means am disqualifying opinions though- design can’t be written by everyone, but for the most part everyone can read it.

That said this logo isn’t very special, but its rare to find a modern corporate logo that is.
