I realize this is a 5-Series discussion, but having driven a '98 M-B CLK, essentially an over-powered skate board, for the past eleven ( 
) years, and with no kids in the house to haul around, I just haven’t found any of the current line of BMW automobiles that attractive. Everything is just too damned big; an on-going trend that began, in all marques, in the sixties.
My opinion changed with the U.S. introduction of the BMW 1 Series last year.
A Cortina pilot in earlier times I lusted after the BMW 2002tii when it came out in 1968 but couldn’t afford one. It’s physical size ( 166" / 2,200 pounds ) is what I would like to have in a new car right now (if I could afford one (are you beginning to see a pattern in my life )). A thousand pounds heavier ( 3,330 pounds) the 135i’s 172" length is pretty damned close to the 2002t, and with the 300hp/300 ft.lb torque (vs. the CLK’s 215hp/230ft.lb) it would flat out smoke the CLK hands down (they are within 50 pounds of each other). It only it were available in 2002 orange.
