1HDC 10.03 - Gestural Interfaces - Submissions

I live with three women. Meaning I get yelled at for leaving the seat up. Well no more I say, with my submission I decided to find a way to do my business, flush, walk away, and not get yelled at. I did that by simply adding a waterproof wireless box on the inside of the toilet, and modified hinges to sense the different direction the seat was facing, when the seat is up, and is flushed, the hinges sense this and lower when the flush has been made.


My design aims to solve bad-morning scenarios or rituals. A wall-mounted alarm clock/radio eliminates its owners ability to sleep in through the alarm.

The usual causes of sleeping in (through my personal experience only) are perpetual-snooze-button-slapping or alarm-unplugging, and phones losing battery power in the middle of the night and effectively disabling the alarm set on it.

The re-designed alarm clock does three things:
Makes you set an alarm
Makes you charge your electronics
And doesn’t let you sleep until you’ve done both of them.


I know, already taken…but still a great idea.
The difference here is not auto-on when pan is in place.
Many pans need to remain on the stove top and be off.

sort of gestural, sort of intrinsic reward system… the more you brush,
the brighter it glows, and over a day fades showing you brushed

Proximity Sensing Headphones
When the user takes the ear bud out of their ear, the sensor will pause the music. When the user replaces the ear bud into the ear, the music continues. This helps the device better understand the user’s intentions through their gestures.

Through better communication to the device, this streamlines the process of pausing music when the user is no longer listening to it.

Re think of the answer phone system.

Problem: The pinncale of flat and boring devices are phones and their answere phones. Sitting\standing infront of a machine listening to messages with that air of uneeded anticipation of who left a message and then having to traipse through messages to get back to the one you wanted to listen to.

Solution: An answer phone system which stores messages in envolopes. open the envelope to hear your message (similar to birthday cards with recorded messages). Each envelope has a dry whipe surface so any details can be jotted down in addition the base displays the number who called and left the message, as well as a small led indicator to let you know there is a message in the envelope.

Having had a number of experiences with roommates that who have the tendency to fall asleep in the shower, I humbly present a solution.

This shower head functions as the method to turn the shower on and off, a physical display of the amount of the time that you have been showering and a way of waking up those who might begin to doze in the comforting warmth of a good shower. If untouched, the shower head slowly descends and eventually shuts itself off - either prompting the user to wake up and start their day (again) or restart the shower to continue cleansing himself. For those without the tendency to fall asleep in the shower, this functions to remind the user of excessive water usage and waste.

Standardized visual gesture library

This idea is all about tracking time while designing. Our firm has used several software solutions to this problem (tick, timefox, ect.) but it would be nice to have a gestural interface as well (especially since I’m particularly bad at remembering to use them). Why not have pencils function like a stop-watch? I could have a pencil designated to each project- when I pick it up, the clock starts, when I put it to rest again, the clock stops.

That already exists. Great minds think alike :slight_smile: I can’t recall who makes them, sony, maybe…saw it on Engadget or Gizmodo I think.

This idea is a personalised movie interface embedded in a cup.

The base of the cup is made so that when the liquid has been drained to a certain degree (perhaps by using a moulded-in straw), the remaining pools in the base look like someone’s face.

Clever moulding of the base, before attaching it to a standard cylindrical wall element, could even result in the appearance of a sequence of different faces, or changes in expression of the original one, as it is drained. (This requires that the depressions in one mould overlap in area those of the next). Since the mould depth varies smoothly, this could be used to arrange a grey-level rendering of the face in question, via the varying darkness of the drink.

This would in effect provide the cup with a kind of internal film show interface mechanism without any electronics. Other subjects are possible, but faces lend themselves to easy recognition and also morphing from face to face.

A light shining upwards from underneath a transparent base could even be used to project the movie onto the ceiling.

The concept here is to allow operators of heavy machinery to coordinate the actions of their machines from a distance both safely and intuitively. The gestures from the remotes allow the user to move the arms, the tools and the position of the machines themselves. Pressing the button and aiming the remotes at a different machine will sync them to that machine, allowing a quick and easy change from task to task.

Holding the remotes next to each other and moving them in tandem could direct machines along a specific path wihle holding them apart and moving them separately would allow for precise control over their operations.

My design was done in roughly 30 minutes. Idea took a couple of moments in my head, second idea came as i worked in Illustrator. I came up with the relatively simple idea when being frustrated by long waits in queues at the bar! I really only drink one type of drink over and over if I’m socialising and so it can be frustrating having to wait in a long queue to do this.

My concept makes it easier to reorder a drink, without queuing. This would of course, need a waiting service to be available.

My first idea was to have coasters that either correspond to a certain type of drink or have the order info scanned into them, that the user would take to sit with their drink. The coaster would weigh the glass, and when the glass was full nothing would happen. When there was no glass on the coaster, nothing would happen. But when the user placed the glass on the coaster empty, this would order another of the same drink, to the table.

I then realised, giving customers a digital coaster can be annoying, like those coasters you get to let you know your dinner tbale is ready.

So idea 2:

A table with an integrated platform, or an additional mat or platform to place drinks on, that would be loacted in the middle of tables. The users can simply put their finished drink in this space to order the same again. The platform would have many ‘weight spots’ so that it can intelligently weigh more than one item at a time. Creating orders for several people at once.


I hope your love for beer (and hate for waiting times) means you have a love for this simple design too.

This is a wireless id, because it is permanently transmitting your ID and your status as a beacon, for your gadgets to get to know how far you are, and which your mood is. Your mood could make to be detected by sensors in the wristband that monitors your breathe, corporal heat, and heart beep. Or set manually.
Gadgets will know if you are near, and will execute a profile depending on the distance to your gadget. if friends are near, and they are using this beacon, your gadget can detect them.
More than optimizing energy consumption of every gadget connected, this interacts with your social networks, it manages the atmosphere of the room depending of your mood, and executes presets for behavior depending of who is with you, like playing the music you prefer for that moment, or dimerize the lights.

The idea is to change the standard radio control for RC airplanes. Current controllers are quite complex, and hard to get used to for some. Is there a faster and more intuitive way of controlling an airplane? I believe that there is. We were doing it all the time when we used to play airplanes as kids. If i didn’t have a toy plane I would just use my hands to mimic myself as a Top-gun fighter jet on the trail of some incoming boogies.

The idea combines our 1st experiences imaginary flight and current technology to try and create a more fun experience of controlling an airplane.

More features will probably need to be added but the basic controls of flight simplified to an intuitive experience.

There are probably more gestures to mimic flight patterns of a jet. But here are the basic ones. Maybe new flight patterns could be introduced to how a plane can move through our hand gestures

Here are two more nuggets I was contemplating. :smiley:

The first is a stretch, I think, but what if the act of driving a car became a “gesture” I know that cars currently can react to driving conditions, and performance varies depending on the need (variable valve timing, cylinder shut off, TCS, audi’s quattro).
What if instead, a vehicle reacted to the driver’s emotional state? The first concept uses an LED strip which informs other drivers about you current aggression/stress level by changing color. The car could measure this based on your driving actions or bio feedback on the steering wheel/seat.

The second sketch is another twist-a-pot-to-control the heat concept. I thought of this early on, but was concerned with obvious safety issues. With multiple pots the user must reach over and around, trying to perform precise maneuvers, bumping pots, handles hanging off the stove, etc. My solution addresses these issues.

These were both done in ~25 min.

With obesity as a major threat, my idea is an aid to maintaining a blalanced diet. It is a refrigerator that has paritioned shelves, each labeled with one of the 5 food groups. Food would be placed (possibly scanned) on the appropriate shelf. As the food is taken off the shelf during the day for meals or snacks, the refrigerator computes (through scanning or weight) how much of each food group is being selected. The shelf ends (facing the door) all begin colored green. As food is removed, the ends turn yellow, then red…signifying that enough of that particular food group has been selected for the day. In this way, the consumer is guided to select from a different area.

With only an hour, this is as far as it goes. There could be individual codes which are punched in for each consumer…This system would not only help adults, but also children, who would be growing up with it as a normal part of life. :smiley:
