Driving in Switzerland

Has anyone done this?

Got to get from Zurich to Gruyeres and the train is 75 Swiss francs per way per person.

Thinking of hiring a car instead and trying to get to Lucerne and Interlaken in the way and maybe head up to the Matterhorn at some point. We’re there for 2 1/2 days.

My wife and I hired a car at Geneva airport to drive down to Alpe d’Huez during the tour a few years ago, so 2 hour traffic jam up the mountains outside Grenoble but apart from that no real problems. Summer so no weather issues, French roads and driving was pretty easy. Petrol more expensive but we drove a diesel Mondeo so it was OK. Similar prices overall.
