Not the main reason they kept them around this long, but it’s pretty interesting actually, a lot of businesses used iPod Touch as cheap wifi connected mobile computers in retail/warehouse/service industry. Since they were cheap, they could buy hundreds/thousands of them and just entirely replace any devices that were dropped or broken. They would typically put a case or barcode scanner on them. Over time I guess a lot of businesses realized they were better off long term with more dedicated devices to meet environmental conditions, with always ready to access tech support for backend/proprietary apps.
