UK/London >>> Design Events

Hello all! I’m new in Britain (since 2009) and find interesting design events happening all the time - there’s a lot going on in the UK…

Planning to post good ones here and invite you to add events too

Here’s one from Design Museum London:

SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME?

Explore Sustainable Futures, David Adjaye’s Urban Africa and Brit Insurance Designs of the Year exhibitions, and gaze into the portal of your imagination and predict the future. The perfect night for actual or potential innovators to flourish with workshops, discussions and music to hand.

Test ride electric bikes: Gocycle
Book bind the sustainable way: with London based artist Lee Maelzer.
Reuse, adapt and adorn: to make fabulous accessories from old discarded jewellery
Soundtrack to the night: London based percussionist Matthew Benyayer

I caught this 2 weeks ago when I visited for the Henry Moore exhibition. It was very impressive in person! It as almost like giant birds of prey trophies

And the Henry Moore exhibit was inspiring as well…

I’ve mentioned it on the boards before, but the London Open House event is coming up in September. I’ve never been before but am hoping I might get a chance to visit a couple of the buildings being opened to the public this year. Basically an event that allows you to check out some amazing architecture in buildings that are not normally open to the public.

The Tate rules.

Yeah it does! The last show I saw there was Pop Life, all about 80’s pop artists last fal. It was such an awesome show, especially the Damion Hirst twins and classic stuff from Koons, Warhol, and Haring. There was a Murakami part with this “Majokko Princess” video specially made for the exhibit. Tate paid for Kristen Dunst to dress up in like an sexy anime character and dance around Akihabara while McG filmed… it was pretty crazy

Another event coming up soon, the DMI Design Management Europe Conferernce 14: Transforming Design in London on Sept 7 and 8th. Headliners include Oliver King of Engine as well as speakers from Adaptive path, MIT, Lego, DBA, the Design Council, etc…

London Design week starts in 5 weeks time. It was a good event last year, lots of things going on around the city. Here’s a link to register for one of the biggest shows, 100% Design London in Earls Court. It’s free TO REGISTER

Tent London’s on at the same time as 100% at The Truman Brewery

Checked this out yesterday. Absolutely incredible, especially standing below the harrier with it suspended above you. And it felt as if the space was built for the harrier, or the harrier for the space, it was a perfect fit. I caught a bit of the video that accompanied the exhibition, but would love to see how the heck they got that thing into the middle of the Tate!

On a downer, looks like I won’t make it back to London for design week this year. Gutted, but it’s Helsinki design week this week to make up for it

Hey Firenzee, you should share what happens at the Helsinki Design week… I for one would be interested in seeing

BTW, there was a video on the Tate Britain website about how they suspended the jets in there. Such an impressive sight!

This is on the fringe of industrial design AND not in the UK, but really cool. One of the lead guys was an HF-ID intern on the NASA design team…

Copenhagen Sub orbitals is a company created by two very motivated guys who want Denmark to have a manned space program. In under a week they are going to test launch their first home-made rocket, unmanned but with crew compartment and dummy, off a platform in the Baltic Sea. They’re towing the launch platform out with their home-made submarine.

Check out the crew compartment - that’s going to be insane ride!

**** Launch Scrubbed****

Launch window: Aug 30 - Sep 17, 2010
Possible date, Launch platform to Bornholm: Tue Aug 31 (75%)
Possible launch date of HEAT-1X-Tycho Brahe: Thu Sep 02 (40%)
