A little follow-up this time:

August's 3BY10 was fantastic! Big thanks to all who came (I counted 45 of you), and to Sean, John and Kat for giving some brilliant talks.

Art Institute had a photographer on hand this time:

Check the full photo stream here, and stay tuned for information on the next 3BY10, Sept. 30.

So, way late on this, but I figured this is a good forum to ask -- did anyone go to the Portland Creative Conference?

I was out of town and couldn't attend. How was it? The blog gives plenty of lead up info, but no review or event coverage. Anyone take notes? Photos? Blog it? Tweet it?

I was going to go to the Poster event over by the Ace Hotel tonight, but by the time I got home, it was time for wrap up. Anyone know how that went?

Thanks Gabe -- I'll check it out in a moment.

In other news, my apologies for no 3BY10 in September. A number of schedule conflicts came up with potential speakers and regular audience, largely related to the start of the school year and the IDSA conference in Miami, and we figured it'd be easier to call it than try and piece it together with partial attendance. Notice went out in the IDSA/OR mailing list as well as on the "official" calendar (which is here if you'd like to keep up to date).

I have taken this opportunity to plan out the remaining 3BY10's for 2009, so go ahead and mark your calendars now. They are:

Wed, October 28
Wed, November 18
Wed, December 16

Those last two were moved up a week to avoid conflicting with Thanksgiving and Christmas, respectively.

Venue will continue to be the Art Institute ID Shop on NW Couch between 8th and Broadway -- feedback indicates this is a favorite spot, both with attendees and presenters, and I have to agree there's something comforting about discussing design while surrounded by band saws.

Presenters are pretty much lined up for October -- announcements shortly -- but space is still available for November and December. If you're a Portland-area designer, industrial or otherwise, and you can spare 10 minutes to tell us about a project, we want to hear from you. Contact information is on the IDSA/OR site.

DATE CHANGE: 3BY10 Design Speaking Event in Portland TONIGHT!

Image

Portland designers: If you haven't already gotten word through the IDSA/OR newsletter or calendar, the 3BY10 design speaking series has been rescheduled for Tuesdays rather than Wednesdays, to avoid a conflict with the Art Insitute's academic calendar.

This is effective for October, November and December, and means that October's event will be TONIGHT, October 27.

On the schedule for tonight:

Mark Bailets of Alpha Omega Creations
Brian Sturkie of Foundry3D
Third speaker TBD

The event will take place at the Art Institute ID Shop (722 NW Couch btw Broadway and 8th -- note this is not the main AI campus location), includes Q&A after each speaker, and admission is free.

6:00p - First two presenters + Q&A
6:30p - Intermission
6:40p - Third presenter + Q&A
7:00p - Social hour - Someday Lounge @ 125 NW 5th Ave

As always, keep an eye on the official IDSA/OR calendar for the latest information, or sign up for the newsletter.

Local architects with far-away ties.
Continuing our bi-monthly “Designs on Portland” discussion series, the topic this month is Local Architects Working in China. Journalist and blogger Brian Libby (www.portlandarchitecture.com) will moderate a panel discussion with Portland architects who have done work in China, including Rick Potestio, Jeff Lamb, Gary Reddick and Bob Packard. This special evening is part of the city-wide events surrounding the “China Design Now” exhibit at the Portland Art Museum, which runs through January 17, 2010.
