Thinking of getting a new ride....rkuchinsky edition

e28 is out… e38 is in.

1998 BMW 740iL. Originally from California. Individual Package with Limonit Metallic paint, Nappa leather interior and Alacantra headliner. Can’t wait to do some cruising… If only I could drive from the rear seats. More legroom (and footrests!) than Business Class!

PS. Not my custom plate

nice! Congrats man. Enjoy it.

How very Transporter of you - clean ride. Though I won’t lie I think I liked the E28 better, but at least now you get a decades worth of new features. As with all old BMW’s hopefully some of them still work.

I did like the e28, but it had it’s time. Was in good to excellent condition when I got it 6 years ago, but had a few things cosmetic and mechanical that were starting to go and not worth fixing. We fell out of love a bit over the years. I would love to get an e28 M5 one day (e28 needs to be stick I think to properly enjoy it).

e38 (fingers crossed) everything seems working (87k mi on it) and while I still have the W115 Benz for fun, girlfriend insisted on a car with AC, proper seatbelts and airbags. 98 seemed like a good compromise - new enough to be modern, but old enough to be unique.

Guy I got it from (who imported from Cali) is a BMW nut. Has a new M5, and previously had an e28 B7 Alpina, e34 Alpina, 850csi, e30 convertible among others…

I didn’t realize you had that e28 for 6 years. You guys had a good run together.

Was actually closer to 7. Longest time I’ve had any car, in fact. Time flies. Not bad for a winter beater

Too many cars, not enough time. The 7 has been in storage for a few years and has to go. Anyone want to buy a classic bimmer

Will keep the Volvo V90-R wagon as the daily for the fam and the 71 Mercedes for the nice weather toy.

Maybe if I didn’t run more miles than I drive it would be practical to keep 3 cars…

Yes, I am sure I want to continue this old conversation. Thank you A.I. for asking.

Because I figuered this old BMW ad (authorised or non authorised?) would fit this old topic.

That’s great, @mo-i … so true.

The e38 is now sold. I will miss it for sure, but with a new baby and one classic Mercedes in the garage, it just won’t get driven and these classics deserve to be more than garage queens.

Want to hear something crazy though? That e28 I had previously has come back to haunt me. Twice.

I sold it as above in 2017 when I got the 7er. Nice guy, said he was going to restore it, knew BMWs, etc. Never thought of it again.

2.5 years ago (July 2021) I got a message on IG from a random guy. Told me he found the car, abandoned, and that apparently the registration was never changed so it legally still belonged to me (the buyer needs to do it after a sale). He wanted to restore it. Said he found it parted out near the docks someplace and gave me the address to take a look. Sounded crazy, but sure enough it was my car! I signed over the registration to the new new guy and never thought of it again.

Last week, just randomly scrolling through Facebook marketplace I see my car. My photo of my car! The last guy who I signed it to (for free! - he just had to tow it), is now apparently trying to sell it. Still gutted and parted out- for more than I originally sold it for! As if it was still good looking. LOL.

I don’t really care (waste of a car though), but sometimes I can’t believe people!

I replied to his listing and told him good luck. haha.

Whoa. What a bummer. Still a nice body. If the components were cut out of the electrics there is not much hope.

One time back in January 2016 my then beloved Audi A6 was nicked during the early morning hours from its space in front of the house. To cut a long story short 3.5 months later I got a call from the German police out of Poland, that they retrieved my engine. I had to tell them, that it was the engine of the insurance company at that point.

A perfectly specced and well cared for A6 Quattro with manual trans had been cut up and molested. Thankfully I did not have to view it.

Got a full payout but was feeling gutted about it, still.

If they had retrieved my Audi A6 like that e28 it would still have been built back by me. But I fully understand, that you were glad to sign the remains over, thus avoiding further legal hassle.

My neighbour brought a 911 as „garden art“ recently. …

My Honda del Sol was not the best car in any category, but it was stolen 15 years ago and I still have dreams about it. In fact, I’ve actually found myself confused thinking that I had it in storage.

The police have never contacted me about it :frowning:

Obviously cars tend to go under our skin.

The only former car, that repeatedly sneaks into my dreams was ripped from me before its time not by shadows of the night, but by terminal rust at 10 years old. The engine was about to drop on the floor.

Yet nearly 30 years later it is still my “dream car.”

IF during a sunny, dreamy, positive dream I have to go for a drive, most of the time it is the Alfasud Sprint. Since I got the duo of the BMW convertible and the Tesla the adhesion to the past has somewhat lessened. But I do as well sometimes go to a corner in an dimly lit industrial building and pull a sheet off my old car, that has been miraculously saved for my future use.

And then I wake up… and scroll the classifieds…

(Thread jack over.)

There’s always one that got away. Either owned or almost.

Before my first classic Mercedes I almost bought a 1970 (I think) Porsche 912. It needed some work and I had never had a classic car so I passed. Would be fun and a keeper today. It was $10,00 or less. Would be worth lots today.

I also almost bought a near mint BMW CSi. Back before they got expensive. Geez.

The only car I still think of, and miss :frowning:
I owned it from new for eighteen years, but kids and a new home forced me to sell it :frowning:

Back in my university days, driving around in a '91 Honda Civic, a local car dealer had an absolutely gorgeous MGB GT that I had some serious thoughts about…I loved the Honda but that MG was interesting, you know?

I thought better of it when I thought of the reality of classic British car maintenance. Still though, it’s the one that got away.

I can remember two cars that I wish I had bought when I was 18. One was a Honda 500 or 600 in a used lot in Florida. The thing was really dusty and probably didn’t run, but no rust and a complete interior that was pretty clean. It hadn’t moved for as long as I remember.

Another was a sea foam green Fiat Spyder that popped up on a lot in Florida. I never drove it, but boy was it beautiful. I’ve never seen one that clean again…

Did you get this one?

Saw that. I’d love an 850 some day but that not only has BaT tax but Jordan tax on the price :joy:

Volvo is in the shop. Got a Q5 rental.

I can’t believe how bad this is. Granted it’s probably a pretty base spec but for a “mid size luxury” SUV?

Look at this center console. I have so many questions.

Why is the 12V plug so prominent?
What fits in the compartment at the top? Too small for a phone. Too small for sunglasses.
Is that little slot compartment supposed to be for a phone on its side?
Why is the volume knob so tiny and far away?
Why is there so much blank space around the compartments? They could be useful.
Why does the shift knob move up/down for reverse and drive but the park is a button? You’d think P would be at one end of the shift throw.
Shouldn’t D be forward and R backwards?

This thing is large but small inside. Compared to my V90 there is less than half the trunk space and less space in the back seats to fit baby seats. I put a rear facing infant seat behind the driver seat and it was pretty much not possible to get the driver seat in a useable position. I’m only 5”10 if that.

I remember when I rented a Grand Cherokee. It was so tiny inside. These SUVs are kind of a rip off.

That centre console is pretty bad. It looks like five people who weren’t talking designed it.
