Laser paint masking?

Hi,
Can someone explain to me what’s going on here?

The rims have a goldish basecoat underneath the black topcoat and the laser is used to strip only the black topcoat while keeping the basecoat intact… I know lasers are used as a common paint stripping method, but are there coatings that are impervious to this?

Well if your basecoat is more heatresistant that the topcoat I imagine you can set the laser to burn away only the topcoat. Nice example.

Hi, sorry for super late reply, but I think I have an idea what’s going on here. They’re likely using two types of surface finishes that react to different laser wavelengths. They’re probably adjusting the laser wavelength to react only with the black top coat.
