Spontanious Vids = Frustration

hey,
I don’t know if it is just me (OSX and Firefox) but the DiTullo Converse vid starts automatically when I enter the Core77 website.

This is very frustrating and does a great disservice to the content and all involved.
Another example was the Solidworks banner, which is now gone (thank god).
I always hated website music too… it makes me furiously search for the off button. almost like fire alarm.

seems to be a trend. I hope not…

It’s how brightcove’s player is setup automatically.
Another annoyance blocker add-on I use for firefox is NoScript. It won’t allow stuff like that to automatically load up and play until you specifically allow it, highly recommended. So all I see is the placeholder box and if I want to watch it, I have to click on it to allow it to play.

mhh, I just added NoScript…

it blocks ALL flash though… so if I go onto a site that has flash, it seems to tell me to “install flash”.
I understand that I then have to tell NoScrip to allow the scrip for the site but that is an extra step that I have to take just because brightcove is setup this way?

oh man…

You’ve got so many of those things… do you even see a webpage anymore?

Here’s the thing with no script, it’ll only do that the first time. Once you click to allow something on that page, it remembers it for good and you’ll never have to do it again. It’s only when you go to a new place that you haven’t “cleared” yet will it do that.
So after installing, you go to core77 and click “allow core77”, and you’ll never have to do it again. If it’s a site you’re not sure about so you just want to allow it this one time you click “temporarily allow so and so site”.

These are the only 2 things I use. This combination though keeps me from ever seeing annoying advertisements and helps keep you safe from potential viruses, etc. I really don’t even notice it, and after you allow all of your standard sites the first time it’s not invasive at all. And it makes your pages load much faster since you don’t get extra gunk automatically playing.

The only issue is if you go to a site like nbc or something and there’s a standard flash vid on there, you might have to guess which one to allow because a site like that will have all kinds of scripts running (that aren’t necessary for your experience, they’re all advertisements and stuff that tells the company what sites you go to, big brother stuff.)

Using AdBlock Plus you can block that individual item on the page… for good.

I do understand that, but this means I have to do this for every site I go to. I am looking and so many sites every day that have flash (research, portfolio sites ect) that this is really slowing me down.
And it is only because a player has the screwed up settings? It sucks!

I say, boycott that player.

seriously, dug that video, but enough already, autoplay videos may be worse than autotune and that’s saying something

Oh my… It’s happening again with the latest Core77 design awards vid.

As charming as swenglish accents might be, please rectify.

That being said, I like the announcement video. I just want to be able to chose when I watch them.

EDIT: Oh I get it… it’s live RIGHT NOW. But still… maybe a link to the live feed might be less obtrusive.

Just got reprimanded because of this…

I placed an animated gif blocker on my browser. I thought we had evolved beyond this silliness.
