LOHAS- lifestyles of health and sustainability

Are there any designers out there going to this non-design conference-- www.lohas.com

It is helping to up-market sustainability and make it more popular and cool, because the LOHAS “lifestyle niche” has a lot of marketing potential–

Even though its not a design conference, it sounds cool- but expensive- any thoughts on this LOHAS market? I feel that there are way more products “designed” for this market that are still on the periphery and want to permeate the masses, instead of vice versa, where mass products can be accepted by LOHAS consumers because they are sustainable enough…

“Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability (LOHAS) describes a $226.8 billion U.S. marketplace for goods and services focused on health, the environment, social justice, personal development and sustainable living. The consumers attracted to this market have been collectively referred to as Cultural Creatives and represent a sizable group in this country. Approximately 30 percent of the adults in the U.S., or 63 million people, are currently considered LOHAS Consumers.

Environmental concerns, human health and human rights are not the only areas of interest to the LOHAS Consumer. The interconnections between global economies, cultures, environments, and political systems play a large role in the holisitic worldview of the typical LOHAS Consumer, but equally important are the interconnections of mind, body and spirit within individuals. This focus on Personal Development, with the ultimate goal of achieving his or her full human potential, is of utmost concern to the Cultural Creative. The current growth in this market group strongly supports the notion that spirituality is no longer relegated to the New Age periphery but is undeniably migrating to the center of mainstream cultural awareness.”
